Default Crane Grind # 274 HO6

Curious as to if anyone has any experience with this particular grind in your SB? We're in the process of starting the build of the motor for my '73 and this is one of the cams that we're considering. The car will basically be a "weekend cruiser" with an occasional road trip. We're using a new GM LM-1 longblock, with "cleaned up" cast iron Vortec heads. Will follow the manufactures recommendation as far as valve springs, etc. More than likely will go with a set of roller tippd rocker arms. The rods are the LT!/LT4 powdered rods, with dished cast pistons. I srtongly suspect these pistons will find a new home on a shelf in my garage. Have a new Edelbrock Performer intake. Also have both an Edelbrock 600 CFM and a Holley 600 CFM setting in boxes, but am open to suggestion here. The motor will be backed by either a built 700r4 or 200r with the proper stall for the application, driving 3.73 gears. I'm not particularly concerned with the car having good "street manners". Smooth, quiet idle is of no concern to me. As a matter of fact, nothing sounds better to me than the sound of "lumpy" cam through a set of headers. Guess that comes from being fortunate enough to have grown up during the era of the true factory muscle cars.
Here's Cranes data sheet/description from their online catalog:

That sounds like a great combo JLM. Looks like you did some thinking before spending you hard earned cash. Only thing I might suggest is to use those rapid/fast leak-down lifters and I've read the crane rapid leakers are the best choice and would be an excellent match for your cam. I think later you might like to experiment with a Q-jet for more cfm (get one rebuilt from lars).
Yes those cast pistons will be the weak link but replacement eutectecs are cheap (<$300). :smash:

cardo0,
Great suggestion on the lifters. Thanks! As far as using a "Lars-ified" Q-jet, you musta' been reading my mind. I'm still a little up in the air with regards to the ignition. I bought the engine from a fellow who had intended to build it for his camaro project and he gave me the GM HEI distributor with a Hypertec high voltage cap/coil that he had bought for his project. I know I'd have to use a later model tach, which isn't a big deal ( this ain't no NCRS car ), but I was under the impression that those particular cap/coils were for computer controlled engines? I read a great deal of debate about "bang for your buck" when it comes to ignition systems. Suppose I could always use the original tach drive distributor out of my original engine......?

Ignition is the cheapest system to optimise but the least understood. Really too much to write about here but the 2 best sources that I know of are: Dr. Jacobs (how to optimise your ign) and David Vizard (how to build hp vol 1 and how to build max perf chev on a budget).
I don't think you'll need a better coil for that HEI but a good module and spring & wieght set-up is the fix for those. Dr. Jacobs book walks you through rebuilding the stock dist. And read the tech tools (tool bar drop down list) on this forum under the C3 section for some great info on setting advance (yes by lars). And use the pieces you have to learn with before spending any more for better(?) parts. :seeya
