All pushrods have hardened tips, but the "hardened pushrods" you refer to are probably the type that have hardened tubes. These must be used it you install pushrod guideplates, which I don't think are necessary on a street engine that will not be revved regularly beyond 6500.

Are you referring to the hardened push rods? The guide plates? Or both?

Every sbc needs to employ one, and only one, of the three methods of keeping the tips of the rocker arms aligned with the valve stems. If guide plates are the method of choice, hardened push rods are a MUST. It has nothing to do with strength or rpms, it is a matter of wear. The guide plates will wear into non-hardened push rods, adding shrapnel to the oil and weakening the push rods.

If not guide plates, then a head, like the cast iron stockers with the slot, cast in, to guide the push rod, or self aligning rocker arms. ONE method is needed to keep the rocker arm tip over the valve stem, regardless of the rpm range of the engine, even in order to idle. Two or more methods on a single engine can cause binding in the valve train.

The Edelbrock heads use guideplates so you definitely need hardened pushrods as they recommend. I believe the difference between the low cost and high cost rods has to do with the material they're made of. Low cost ones have a hardened surface, high cost ones use a harder steel to begin with. I've been running the "low cost" ones with Edelbrock heads for several years without any problems.

Are there any downsides to self aligning rockers? They seem like the best option...

See CFI-EFI's post above. If the heads were designed for self-aligning rockers, they are the right way to go. If the heads were designed for use with non-self aligning rockers, they may work with self-aligning rockers with modification (and the removal of guideplates if they have them). Keep in mind that there's a much better selection of non-self-aligning rockers out there than there is for self-aligning ones.

Timing is everything...see if you can use these Comp PR's--7.200" 5/16" .080" wall hardened. Like new...maybe 200 miles on them? I paid ~ $125. How about $65 shipped?
