You can also determine "deck height" by measuring piston crown to deck clearance then adding this to the sum of crank throw radius, rod center to center length, and piston compression height. It's tough to measure deck height directly unless you have some special tools.
The nominal deck height for vintage SBs is 9.025", but most are machined high by at least five to ten thou. They can also vary side to side and can have a little front to rear taper.

That IS the deck height of the block. On a small block Chevy, the "blueprint" deck height is, 9.025" Many deck the block to less than that to get the PISTON deck clearance closer to zero. The piston deck clearance is measured from the "flat" portion of the piston to the deck. The squish area clearance is from the "flat" of the piston to the "flat" or squish portion of the head. Therefore, the squish, piston to head clearance, is the deck clearance of the piston, plus the compressed thickness of the head gasket. The "compression height" of a piston is the distance from the centerline of the piston pin to the "flat" portion of the piston deck. You are NOW ready to start planning.
