It is an LS type engine with all the potential of the other Gen III engines. It seems to me that one of the car magazines installed some bolt ons on one, and it responded just as you would expect a Gen III to. Very well.

RACE ON!!!
I think I know the article you're talking about. I believe they did a cam, LT's tune and got 450 at the crank. Not sure if any head issue was addressed.
I wish I had one in my '84 to hotrod. That's about the only engine I'd consider to replace my Crossfire.
The Crossfire is great but I could be persuaded by a nice pretty LS1.
Got one in my Z28 that hauls mule butt. That thing is a super 'happy' engine.
Mine has 78,000 on the clock and runs just like brand new..including the lifter or piston slap noise it made on the day it was brandy new.
Goes away after running about 2 minutes.
BTW,
Horsepower TV pulled theirs out of their SS Camaro this past weekend...
spun rod bearing... can you say 'used and abused'?
Have that motor in my 02 truck. At 56k miles I cant complain-Like yours, tons of slapping and lifter noise just like it was when I bought it new. No problems. Cool thing is they will handle an overbore sufficient enough to toss an LS1 piston in.

Yeah. Apparently all the LSx series motors are prone to it. Some worse than others. Mine did it from the night I picked it up. Still does it, but runs great! A little cold start piston slap too, I might add. I've gotten "used" to it, knowing that I'm not the only one. One heck of a motor: these things are practically indestructible!
I have the 5.3 in my Silverado that could one day be a rebuild for my vette I too have the cold start piston slap, I don't like to drive it for at least a minute in my climate because it just sounds harsh

I had an 87 Suburban with a TBI 350, a 96 Suburban with a MPI 350 and now I have an 03 Suburban with the 5.3. The 5.3 flat out is the best out of the three. The power really comes on about 2800 rpm & up. Almost scary the first time I got on it. Now that I'm used to it, I feel the need for "More power". I had originally planned on modding mine when I bought it with a Comp 212/218 cam and some headwork, exhaust, Trailblazer(2600)converter. A buddy of mine has a similar setup in his and I was shocked at the power from that little motor!! For a heavy truck these move well.
