Re: Aluminum Small-block (bigsapper)
This is a trick question right? How about the LS1 in the C5 Corvette and the later F-bodies?

Actually, I meant the generation prior to the advent of the LS1/Vortec blocks and also excluding the LT1/LT4 blocks.

Wasn't the LT1 a cast-iron block with aluminum heads?
The 1992-1996 LT1 that is.

Sometime between 68 and 71, there were a couple of Big Block aluminum ZL1's put in Corvettes....

Re: Aluminum Small-block (Desertdawg)
So there wasn't an all-aluminum small-block during that era? What about the 302, was that cast iron?

Re: Aluminum Small-block (bigsapper)
No aluminum small-blocks before the LS1; the 302 was an ordinary production iron 350 block with a 3" crank.

Re: Aluminum Small-block (OlGeezer)
Except for the C5 LS1/LS6 already mentioned, the only aluminum small block ever used in a production car (Corvette or otherwise) were the very, very limited GS cars. Used a 377ci all aluminum engine.
The ZL-1 aluminum big block 427 was used in only two known Corvettes in '69 and in about 50 '69 Camaros.

Re: Aluminum Small-block (gerry72)
The three GS coupes only used the 377 aluminum blocks in their first race at Nassau in '63; they were replaced by 377 iron blocks for Sebring in March '64 for durability reasons, and the two roadsters, released later, used iron blocks right from the beginning. There were sixty-nine 1969 ZL-1 Camaros; the first fifty were built in February, 1969, and the last 19 were built in March.
