If you're using IE, you should see the ABC icon in the upper-right corner of the message field (as shown in a previous screen capture). However, to make that feature work, yes, you will need to download the addon to install onto your IE browser. As mentioned, it's free and is specifically for IE browsers:

Firefox and Chrome browsers won't see the ABC icon, however, they both have a native spell check function that can be enabled to check spelling while typing.
