Default Pulled over - Ocean Pkwy

Hey all,

I got pulled over yesterday for the most BS ticket ever.

I was in bumper to bumper traffic near Jones beach heading over the Robert Moses... Trooper gets into left shoulder and looks like he is passing all to attend to an accident or something. Well I thought wrong, he gets behind me and I'm confused as hell about it, and pull over immediately.

The guy was completely monotone and tells me I have no front plate. I disagree and he askes me to step out of the vehicle, I do so, walk to the front of the car... *face palm* I forgot to flip the plate out after I washed my car the previous evening... So he is literally staring at the part that sticks out from my 'show and go' plate and says "what plate." I say "right here" and pull it out (he is staring at that spot the whole time). He asks me to get back into my vehicle... Mind you I hand him my license, 3 PBA cards (high ranking NYPD officer included) and he hands back the cards within 30 seconds. That's never a good sign. He proceeds to take 30+ mins to write me a ticket for my license plate..

One of my best friends is a cop and admits that this was a pretty a-hole-ish move by the trooper. I'm always respectful of the law and what not, but seriously a ticket *literally* for a 'dirty/insecure plate' when there were drunks all over the road on this holiday weekend is just absurd.

By the cop not honoring your PBA cards, hes basically telling the officers who gave that to you they can go scratch their ***. Its just common professional courtesy.

When that exact same situation happened to me, the officer who gave me my card (a Sgt) called up the station and reamed the officers' captain out

It's too bad the cops who gave me the cards actually deal with real crimes ...

one is a Deputy Inspector and C.O. of a precinct in NYC
the other works in Brownsville Brooklyn.....

put it to you this way, they would never even imagine giving out a lame ticket like this...

I moved from a state that mandates front plates..something I just don't see all that necessary? ? Hope the ticket isn't all that bad.

Troopers don't give courtesy. Plus with everything going on with the nypd ticket scandal pba cards will soon be worthless.

That sums it up!

Getting a ticket is never a good thing, but it is what it is. You had the front plate available, but it needs to be properly affixed and displayed. You were halfway there, but that doesn't count.
I don't run a front plate, but I know I'm rolling the dice.

Yeah I hear you all.. It is what it is at this point. I'm just wondering what the fine will be, it only has me down for a court date. I'd prefer not to miss work.

While I was pulled over a Silver C6 with exhaust passed by me, I wonder if it was anybody on these forums?

As I've said before, PBA and FOP cards aren't "get out of jail free" cards. To be quite honest, I don't even think they should be legal. Because you "know" someone? Pure BS. Smacks of outright corruption.

Why should anyone get special consideration? The officer should evaluate your infraction on it's own merits, along with other factors such as your previous driving history and severity of the infraction. Who you're friends with should never be part of the consideration. So I don't feel for you that your PBA card wasn't "honored".

But in your case, that was clearly a pretty low move on the part of the officer. I think a simple explanation that you forgot to flip up the plate should have sufficed and should have had you on your way after making sure you had no warrants. But clearly he had an axe to grind.

I took a lot of heat in another thread about someone complaining PBA/FOP cards weren't being honored when someone was street racing going over 100mph. We all know when thier should be professional courtesy, but when you risk the lives of others by doing stupid things like that, you deserve exactly what you should get. OK, rant off.

But a front plate that was just flipped down, c'mon. That's just plain dumb.

Beach cops will never give you a break for anything. It is a form of income for there city/town. I got pulled over years ago at seaside beach in NJ for having my sunglases hung on my mirror. Another time I was pulled over after the cop stopped behind me at a light, he said I had a bald rear tire. Was so pissed I took my car to a shop and had them measure my tread so I could easily beat the worthless ticket. Only at the beach....

My general rule is that when the PBA sends me their plea for a donation each year (sometimes more than once a year) I'll send them a check AS LONG AS I HAVEN'T BEEN ON THE RECEIVING END OF A MV CITATION. It has worked for me almost every year, much the same as having a good snow blower lessens your chance for snow storms in the winter time. If I DO get a citation I just use those funds that I would have sent on to their union and call it a day (year).

I can see getting a ticket in another state for what has to be the ugliest license plates in the U.S. , but I think the trooper was a tool for writing you up. If you had no plate, it would have been warranted.

I don't know........this was right around the corner from where you were stopped...

http://www.myfoxny.com/dpp/news/loca...Moses_Causeway

after being smacked in the head by a guy high oh PCP who takes your baton you were hitting him with away from you....one round one kill.

I'll tell you a secret, the guy on the road fights more crime (or in this case for their life) than a boss behind a desk who shuffles paper.

Cheap ticket yes, but if a plate isn't displayed its not displayed.

That being said in 8 years I've never had a front plate on my vettes, its a cost of owning a vette, you get some tickets...

As others said, although it's BS, you have no recourse. I just don't need the aggravation of dealing with judges and police anymore, because 9 times out of 10, even if you're right, you're wrong in the eyes of the judge. I make sure I play by the rules.
I only won one case for a parking ticket since the town, East Hanover, NJ was in violation of their own statute with improper signage in an area. Judge made me sit through the entire court schedule, and then said, " Oh, we have two parking tickets here. They are dismissed". I didn't even get to say anything. Just pay up, call it a day, and move on. There's too much important stuff to worry about., and in this case you'll never win.

Clearly this Trooper is a TOOL i have no respect for the Troopers here in NYS. They think there poop does not stink. I have found in the past that these TOOLS are clearly very annoyed that there so underpaid as law enforcement personnel. The TOOLS upstate are worse than the TOOLS downstate. Anyway if NYS says you need a front plate and you are caught with the plate off i think the state should issue a warning which they can put in there system. Then if you are caught again they can issue a ticket

I'll tell you another secret:

Watch out for generalizations!

Some of those bosses did an awful lot of crime fighting before they got strapped to that desk, and a good number of those still make the time to come out from behind that desk and get their hands dirty whenever they can.

I've met lots of cops who think that their boss started out as a boss when in reality that boss was probably running around doing police police work when the cop was in diapers.

I've also met a few cops on patrol who could never be accused of being a crime fighter.
