Default C6 beats 911 Turbo, Z06 beats 911 GT3

See Aug 07 issue of Car & Driver magazine. The article is entitled "LIGHTNING STRIKES TWICE - ROUND 2 OF OUR PERFORMANCE BENCHMARK AT VIRGNIA INTERNATIONAL SPEEDWAY...."

Winners:

under $30,000: Pontiac Solstice GXP
other players: Mazdaspeed 3, Mini Cooper S

$30,000 - $60,000: C6 Corvette
other players: BMW Z4 M Coupe, BMW 335i Coupe, Ford Shelby GT500
....and the biggest surprise was the astonishing performance of the base Corvette with Z51 package. ....this time around the Z51 blazed around the course in 3:03.6....That time bests those of the Audi R8 and Porsche 911 Turbo, cars that cost more than twice as much as the Z51's base price.
$60,000 - $120,000: Corvette Z06
other players: Porsche GT3, Audi R8, Audi RS 4, Lotus Exige S
The overall champ of the day was Corvette Z06.....The Z06's 2:58.2 lap made it the first Lightning Lapper to get around VIR's Grand Course in less than three minutes, which is all the more remarkable, considering it does not have the sticky, racing type tires the 911 GT3 enjoys.
Once again, GM proves that good ol' American engineering beats German engineering at far less cost. Here's a few thumbs up for the greatest sportscars in the world!

Is that the new 436 hp C6 Z51 or an 07 400hp version?

Thanks for the heads up.

That's the 07, 400HP version. The 08 would undoubtably have performed even better!

[Porsche lovers] yeah, but it's not as refined and elegant [/Porsche lovers]

In all seriousness, what's even more impressive is that the Vettes did that with a huge tire disadvantage. Run flats vs near race slicks? I'd love to see what the Vette would do with some real tires.

Back in the late 80s, after losing quite a few track races to the C4 Corvettes, Porsche air-lifted a new C4 to Germany to try to figure out why their flagships were getting owned. I guess they still haven't learned........

I wonder if that silver 911 Turbo was a bad sample. In the July issue they tested a 911 Turbo in a comparo and it was slower than average 911 Turbo acceleration times. The 911 Turbo cars pictured in both the July and August issues are both silver.

The 911 Turbo that they tested was loaned to them by a private owner. It is not the same one that was tested previously.

Car & Driver testers usually get the best acceleration times out of the cars they test - better than Road & Track, better than Automobile, and better than Motor Trend. If C&D says the C6 laps faster than the 997 Turbo, then I believe them!
