Here's the deal. My interior is really solid and has been ripped out down to bare metal. There are a few rust spots here and there, rivets need to be replaced and some fiberglass work needs to be done - nothing big. I want to paint the floor boards and metal seat riser with a paint which will protect my car from rust permanently, but will still allow me to weld/grind off when I need to fix the rust holes. I want to prevent further rusting from occurring. I thought about using por-15, but the problem with using that stuff is that it is impossible to grind and weld around. It also needs to be top coated or, when I work on the car outside on a sunny day, the paint will peel and or be weakened according to their spec sheet. I also want to be able to easily apply a paint...maybe something which is in an aerosol can. Any suggestions? This will be my only coat on the interior. When it comes time to weld the rust holes shut, I'll remove the paint in the area to be repaired, reweld it, then paint over the repair. I want a paint which is really tough, preferably in a spray can. Maybe rustoleum? ANy suggestions guys?
IMO, Rustoleum would work just fine on the interior surfaces. You only need to get loose rust and corrosion off the surface before you paint. Also, it would be much less expensive -- and I think easier -- to brush it on. Buy a quart and a brush that will fit in the can, then have at it! Don't forget to leave the drain holes in the floorboard, and then put in the rubber plugs so that rain doesn't get back into the interior via the holes. Also, you want to insulate the floor, firewall, tranny tunnel, and seatback riser with Reflectix insulation before you install carpet. Trust me [us] on that one; it is a "must do".
If you have access to a spray gun, use epoxy primer DP from PPG for example. The bottoms of some of the new cars have nothing more than epoxy on them. It will definitely keep the inside from ever rusting.
If your floorboards are rusting on the interior side, you need to find out where the water is coming in from first. Then worry about painting it, but the epoxy paint would get my vote.
