I have a maco metallic gray paint job. It was their bottom line $500 job. Can i shoot clear over it? I know it is not the right way or the preferred way but is it possible?

No...it is too late for that. The materials that they use are so crappy...on the cheap bottom line paint jobs...usually will not allow anything to be applied on them but their synthetic paint products...from what I have been told by other painters who have tried to do painting on top of this type of paint.
Not only that...you have to prep the paint for the clear to adhere...and being a metallic...you will disturb or destroy the metallic structure...and when you apply clear on top of it...it will show that the metallics are no longer evenly dispursed. A big mistake. AND if you try to put clear on top if it without prepping it...the clear will NOT adhere and fly off in time...in big sheets.
Lastly...the previous paint was not...more than likely ...properly prepped...and it is possible in time you will start to have problems..because there is no way to paint a car correctly and have it last for $500 ...paint materials and labor included. This car...whenever it is neediing to be painted again...will require stripping of all paint...and start from scratch. Enjoy what you have for the time being.
Thanks DUB,
My son and I are restoring a 71 vette. We wanted to practice shooting something and he offered up his 1992 truck that we put a bottom end paint job on. We weren't looking for perfection or long lasting results, just practice. Thanks for the advise.

Well... if you want to use it as a pratice vehicle...then have at it....but if you are restoring your 71...you have plenty of panels to pratice shooting gelcoat, primer, etc on....and not waste the $$$ on clear. But it is your choice...needless to write.
In your original post...I thought you were asking the question to see if it could be done with good results....and not just pratice.
