Default How much paint

I know this question has been asked before but I searched and can't find the answer. How much paint is needed for a repaint on a '65 coupe?

Thanks,
Brian

It has a lot to do with the paint company that you choose. Some paints are weak in toner strengths...thus requiring more paint. Which in turn can make that color hard to achieve total hiding of the undercoat. For me...in the system I use. I could paint your entire car with 3 quarts of un-reduced/thinned basecoat and still have paint left over...and that is even dealing with many of the new pearl colors which are very transparent. If it is a solid color (red, black, white, etc.) it would take even less than 3 quarts...but I like to have some left over for future repairs if needed.

Paint guns, painting style or technique and other issues can also come into play...which can make it where you "eat" up more paint than is actually needed.

Hope this helped.

I used a full gallon of Roman Red on my '62, didn't paint the hard top. This was with "old style" equipment. If using a modern HVLP paint system probably significantly less. Bob

Thanks for the replies. I will probably go with PPG Deltron DBC, I painted a Camaro with it and it turned out very nice.

I used that very same paint in silver on my 69. Bought a gallon and a half, half for oops, used a gallon. Got 3 coats with an HVLP gun.

Deltron DBC calls for 1:1 mix + 5% activator, so I would buy a gallon and a quart. That will give you 2.5 gallons of sprayable material, just in case. I know it will cost a little extra money, but better than having to have more mixed and trying to blend it in. No 2 mixes are not the same. Get more than enough on the first mix.
