what causes paint cracking ??
I've been paying a lot more attention to the paint jobs on some of the "show" cars I've seen lately, I've noticed that there are quite a few that have some pretty extensive "cracking" going on. It's not really noticable until you get right up on the cars then you can see it, very fine cracks. I've seen them in single stage paints and base/clear where just the base is cracked.
my thought is it has to do with what temperature the body was when painted, if the panels were cold (shrunken) when painted then expanded as they warmed up the paint may not "stretch" enough to stop the cracking.
Applying WAX over the paint before it has had a good time to cure.
Sloppy repairs and painting over a bad surface "thinking" that the primer they used will hold thing down and prevent cracking....YEAH---RIGHT!!!
Someone who thinks they are a chemist creates a "cocktail" of different layers of products not actually knowing what will happen in the future.
