Default Help! Clear-coat problem

I'm painting some side-skirts and a chin splitter using spray cans. The Sand, Prime and Paint portions went well, but on a test piece, I ran into this issue with the clear coat.

Seconds after spraying, the paint did this:

the veins developed and covered the entire piece and I'm not sure what it's called or why it's happening.

Any advice is appreciated.

I've had that happen when I didn't wait long enough before spraying the final coat.

The one thing that I hope you understand is that when using an aerosol paint product. APPLICATION of it is very important.

Most people do not have a clue when applying an aerosol paint. they apply it heavy and it takes twice as long to dry than if they apply it in light coats ...to build a base and then apply a good coat to "wet -it-out and make it slick.

SO.. ( due to the information was not given in your post) that this project is being shot with the SAME paint manufacturer from beginning to end...right???

IF it is not...then that can be a PROBLEM due to a reaction (Gatoring)...looking like the skin of an Alligator. Now..this effect is not like bubbling or wrinkling....which is a chemical reaction due to components "not liking" one another. SO I would bet that the clear was applied too soon and/or applied too wet to a surface that had not had enough time to dry out.

I am GLAD to read that you tested it first...and you will have to figure it out because you are not using products that you can control. The end result of this product can fail in time due to the properties of what it is. Externally exposed panels that are aerosol painted and subjected to the sun can fail. NOT ONLY THAT...an aerosol paint is NOT catalyzed and the paint is solvent sensitive. The amount of paint applied during each coat...and the time it is allowed to dry between coats is important...and following the direction on the can may not take into account that you are trying to apply coats of clear....which is adding more material and causing a potential issue.

It can take DAYS for it to dry enough to re-apply and or clear. It all depends on how you are applying it. That is the problem with aerosol paint...so many ingredients that slow down its drying and or aid in preventing fish-eyes and other "things"... that it can work...but it is nothing like an automotive grade paint. This is why it can be tacky days later when put in the sun and allowed to get warm/hot. But when it is inside ...out of the sun...it will not feel tacky.
