Default Deck lid hinges continued

I'm posting here in addition to a previous post. It's a 1969 that I'm trying to sort out any information is appreciated.

https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...e-problem.html

I'm hoping to do some more detective work on my hinge problem. Does anyone know if all hinges were the same length?

If the hinges end up being all the same why did they change the nut plates? Was there a change in the underbody or something with the rear surrounds.

This 'detective work' would cause me to go into my GM parts illustration catalog and look and see if the part number changed...which more than likely they did and have...so this can mean a design change of some type.

Is there any special reason you need to know this???? Because if you can get any parts that were in the car and replace them with ones just like it...and the only issues it the slotting that was done on the top of the hinge....I would put it right back in and let it ride.

But if you need to know...respond according and I will look. But as you know...when the rear deck is bonded to all the other related parts...that area is pretty much set..and it is a matter of getting the hinge in and shimming it if needed. It is not like it is going to go anywhere once it is in.

Dub, thanks for the reply. The car, or multiple cars used to build the one has turned into what's right, what's wrong type of search. Willcox posted that part numbers did change but I was wondering if the physical hinge length changed and why the different nut plates starting in '71? The early plates look taller for some reason. Can't imagine GM slotted my hinges so the answer probably points to some chop shop work in the past.

I'm thinking if the hinges are all the same length then my rear deck is bonded slightly low? Maybe close to 1/2". Just looking for any thoughts or possibly measurements from some 68-69 convertible folks. As always any help is appreciated.

You would be surprised what GM mirth have done during assembly if they ran out of parts and had old one laying around. Back then...they guys in the plant were under quotas...so improvisation was needed.....so I have been told from a reliable source.

The height difference could have been in the floor pan area back by where this hinge goes by number 4 body mount.

Once again..is there any special reason you are doing detective work other that just knowing??? If you are going for judging and that stuff...then it might be worth contacting a judge or person who actually may know what went on and if your car was one of the few that had a modification due to lack of correct parts....

Because if the car is together and parts fit...I am wondering why you might want to back up and replace parts that are not really needed...if what you have now fits and works.

Hi Dub,
No thoughts of judging, just putting together the back story. I had to repair the birdcage and in the process of removing multiple layers of paint found the doors and deck lid base color was silver. Later stripping found the rear surround base color to be corvette bronze. It didn't have a trim tag so not sure which is correct. The rear surround had been cut on both sides (see picture) Which I've read was one way to replace lock pillar covers. I assumed that was the reason but maybe it was the rear surround that was replaced? I hoped someone might have some hinges to compare measurements. I would think that height is important to panel fit and might explain my heavy shim count at #4 mounts and all the body filler I found during paint removal. Thanks for the reply.

Understood.

I run onto Corvettes at times that have been sectioned and were numerous different colors. I always have the greatest concern where the bonding took place and if they actually joined the panels correctly.

YES...a high shim count at the number 4 body mount and be just what you are thinking and also a possible tweakage in the frame. It does not take much for that area to require a lot of shims.

Dub, once again thanks for the reply. I'm going to get back to working on other parts of the car and circle back to this later. Hope to finish underbody brackets and insulation soon.

If anyone comes across this thread with a 68/69 convertible tore down and could pull a few measurements send me a message.

Hi Dub
Thanks for the offer.
Just for comparison, can you measure down from the rear surround lip like in the picture ?

Also if yours has the rear astro vent, does the drain port line up center with the holes exiting the rear bulkhead? Mine don't line up and sit towards the drivers side.
