Undercoat? Sealer?
I am doing a frame on restoration of a 71 convertible. At this time it is red, with a black sealer or undercoat that is nothing like the red topcoat I scraped the red off with a razor blade. The black is thick and sands easy. I am pretty sure the black is on top of bare fiberglass. The car was an original Ontario Orange, with a yellow coat over that. These colours are still on the door jambs and under the convertible top cover.
It looks like the car was stripped using razor blades back in the mid 80's (from documentation as well as razor blades found in the cowl). The red colour was all cracked and stripped off relatively easy.
Should the black come off? What would be your best guess on what that black layer is? Is this what caused the cracking or would it have been the red?
At this time I am willing to put in the effort to strip whatever is necessary, with by sanding or a chemical strip. I do not want to mess this up just in case I decide to farm the job out and not do it myself.
And last...There is an Aircraft Paint Stripper I read about on the forums as well as an Aircraft Paint Stripper Fiberglass safe stripper. I would assume the Aircraft Paint Stripper works faster. I would be using it on the black (if it is effective). If I follow the directions can I use the Aircraft Paint Stripper.
Thanks for the help
I have no clue what the black stuff is and it does not matter because you are taking it all off anyway.
If you use the Aircraft stripper..I prefer to use automotive grade lacquer thinner to scrub and wipe the panels down with instead of water.
I do not know or remember if I have written up how I use the chemical stripper....I am sure I had but if you can not find it and want a tutorial on it to help you out...PM me and I can get you my shop phone number and you can call me.
