Default Wiper Area damage

I am new to this site and new to working on a vette as well. In the process of removing the factory gunk/sealant from my windshield wiper area, I either damaged an area myself or uncovered some damage right under the windshield on the driver side, just above the wiper mounting plate. Just at this area was some kind of sealant that may go under the windshield. It is very hard sealant and not the type of sealant at seams of body panels. At this point, I think I need to keep going to remove this hard sealant to determine the entire scope of the damage.

The first pic below is a peace of material that was removed from the damaged area. It looks like it has fibers like fiberglass, but I am not sure as this should be SMC. My Vette is an 82.

The second pic is where the peace of material came from as I was trying to remove the hardened sealant.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Today I used a heat gun and removed the remaining hardened sealant from the damaged area, then used Eastwood pre-prep cleaner on the area. Below is a pic of the drivers side damaged area and the passenger side with no damage. Does anyone have any suggestions to repair this area?

Hey DUB,

Per our conversation on this topic, I pointed at the two areas on the pic were I am seeing holes using arrows in paint. I attached another pic as well trying to show the area close up and without using a flash.

Dub,

I also took a flash light and held it on the inside of the car and up under the dash, just behind were these holes are. I am not seeing any light shinning through these holes. They may just be voids in the sealant between parts.

Thanks,

Excellent photos.

These holes are rust holes on the edge of the section of the birdcage framework that your firewall section rivets to....or at least that is what it appears to be.

If it were a gap where the facotry sealant was and came out...it would not look like that.

I took a heat gun to the area and removed sealer between the holes where it is a constant groove between the birdcage and the wiper compartment edge. I don't really see any evidence of rust.

But from your second photo in POST#3.. I swear that looks like there are holes there. Because rust can develop from the backside and eat through and not show signs of rust at the edge when it finally breaks through the outer surface.

So...if when you cleaned out the old sealer.. Those two areas that looked like holes were actually the black e-coat that is on the birdcage steel and there are NO holes. The all you need to do it seal up that seam like we discussed on the phone.
