Default Is this press molded panel correct?

I received two press molded quarter panels for my 68 and they are not what I was expecting. I thought they should have a shiny smooth surface not what you see in the picture.

Thanks
Ron

That looks normal to me for a press molded fiberglass panel for a 1968.

If you need to see a photo of an original fender from GM for a 1968-1969. I can post a photo of it. I still have an unused original here.

IF it were an SMC panel than it would be slick as glass on both sides and look like a light grey marble with dark streaks in it. Which this is clearly not.

Thank You Dub. I don't post much as I find most of my information with the Search feature but this one came up goose eggs. What the best way to prep the panels for paint?

Ron,

The panels need to be sanded to get the slight texture you see in them out . The grit you use depends on what you plan on shooting on them...such as gelcoat, polyester primer, epoxy primer or regular 2K primer.

Keep in mind...where ever you do not sand and get it roughed up...no matter what you apply on it...it will not stick for long. Think of it like painting on a piece of glass. The paint will stick for a while...but in time it will start to flake off.

The choice on what needs to be put on a panel like this is widely debated and numerous ways have been used a with success....so the choice is yours. I...myself....would apply gelcoat on them and then take it from there and apply a polyester primer...then seal it...then paint and clear coat it. I am not a fan of single stage on a Corvette. But many have done it with great results also.

Wax and grease remover is always a good idea before sanding any new fiberglass part out of a mold. When it comes out of the mold, it always takes some of the wax with.
