Default LPE 383 A4 cam ?

I have the LPE 383 475/450 package A4 with a 342 gear and a 2400 stall. The car runs great but I thought of bumping the cam up to a 224/228 on a 114. Is anybody running this cam in a 383 A4. The car runs stock until you get on it. Just wondering how much it would affect the drivability of the car and how much power it would add. The car dyno is 384/389.

Thanks

That power is ridiculously low. You need new heads and cam. I still cannot beleive people pay this much for such weak power numbers. Auto or not, small cam or not, 384 rwhp and 389tq is LOW. A 224/228 cam on a 383cid motor will idle very smooth, especially on a 114 lsa. Look into something larger, but keep the LSA big and you dont run into idle problems. How about a 231/237 on a 113-114..

I know the numbers do seem low, the cam that is in there now is 207/220 114 with a 580 lift. That is without headers. The car runs very strong, the power is right off idle. I like the car for the street. I thought if I put headers, under drive pulley and the 224/228 cam, I could see 415-420. It would still drive like it does now. It does not need to be stronger off the line because of traction. I thought it would be stronger around 2500-3000 to redline at 6500.

Thanks

I've got 439 rwhp and mine is only a 350.

Long tube headers should really help you a lot.

How much do they charge and does this only include the lunati stroker kit, they do not upgrade the heads cam etc and obviously this did not include headers, you can get a lot of power with the extra cubes but h/c headers you should be more in the 450rwhp range which is perfect for c5s and low profile tires, more than that and you will have a serious traction issue believe me---

1. engine removal
2. Custom block prepartion
3. CNC porting and polishing
4. Stainless steel intake/exhaust
5. Forged aluminum piston 10:7:1
6. Forged steel crankshaft, connecting rods
7 Reassemble and blueprinting
8. Ported TB
9. corsa exhaust and H pipe
10. Donalason intake
11. 2 year warranty

The car runs great for the street, from light to light it would be hard to beat. I believe it would run low 12's or high 11's if I knew how to drive. Just thought I would try another cam.

Don't apoligize for the choice you made in engine upgrade!!! Your engine IS strong, the torque IS good, considering you don't have headers, and you have a baby cam. Plus, you've got strong internals, and you could do just about anything you wanted to do with the engine, and KNOW it'll hold together. You made the choice for the package you had installed, and I know WHY you made that choice. It was a SMART move, and your going to be happy with that engine for a long time. Your LPE-383 will still be going strong when some of these nay-sayers engines have taken a CRAP!!!

In a few weeks Tony (AFR) will show some dynos of his current build-up projects. One of them includes a 382 with his 224/228 cam. Of course his will be sporting a set of AFR205s also... My guess is he will be just under 500rwhp (SAE)...

A 224/228 cam in a 383 stroker is a VERY small cam I doubt if you find anyone running a cam that small. Minimum you should be running something like the MTI R1 232/236 578/575 114, in a 383 stroker even this cam is considered mild.

My car is just a H/C 346 with a mild cam and your HP is similar to what HP my car is making. The cam that you currently have is MUCH too small. If I were you get a set of 1 7/8 LT headers so that 383 can breath. Next I would get a set of decent heads, a bigger cam, something like the R1 would give you very good power and good driveability. And lastly I would get a real high stall T/C. I would get the SS3600 to go along with your 3.42 gears.

You definety need a bigger cam. i was running a 232/236 600 lift on my 350 and it hade a little shake but not that much. Idled around 975!

The cam shaft is the best upgrade for power on a LSX motor. With a 232+ cam you should be 420ish range with stock headers. My new motor from Lingenfelter (350) will use a 228/232 cam.

Your numbers are perfectly fine with that baby cam in your motor, but I strongly suggest you go bigger than a 224/228 in that 383 or you'll be asking this same question about it a few months from now.

I'd get something in the 230-240 duration range. If you want something that idles very smoothly, stick with the 114 LSA. If you want a cam with a nice lope, then go for a 112.

Good luck!

I agree, there is nothing wrong with that package.Headers alone would get u 25/25 not to mention another 20/20 from a cam change and it would still idle like it does now.

I'd look into something like a R1 fro MTI or even alitte bigger....U should be able to get a solid 430/440 once its all retuned,

Now if u wanna go alitte more power then I'd opt for a LSX/90 also because its worth another 15RW.....Realistically u could end up easily pushing 445/455 threw an A4 which would equate to 470/475 in a 6sp car...

IMO 224-228 is still too small...
230+/580+ would be better.....

Thanks for all the responses, I have alot to consider. I might think about A&A SC set up at low boost just the way the engine sits, I,'ll let
you know.

Let me be the dissenter here.
Lot's of people say go big on camshafts, I don't think so for the street. I am getting great power with a baby cam:218/218, .561 lift on a 114. I think the 224/228 would be a great upgrade, if you aren't planning on putting on long tube headers, if you do I'd consider a 228/228. Torque and power in a usable rev range rule on the street. I don't want a street car that comes on the cam at 4,000 and up. 2,500 to 6,200 is better for the street. Drag racing only, different story.

Not talking trash but I have 400 rwhp on a bolt one Z, so I would not be happy at all with those numbers. I know LPE's name is spotless, but for the amount of money their packages run outside of the twin turbos, they are very low. A new cam and headers would make a HUGE improvement. How much shake are you willing to put up with?

That is my point, I know I can put a much bigger cam in and get big power, I want usable power. This is for street use only. I had a 216 220 cam in my last A4 01 coupe with 12to1 cr, from light to light this car was hard to beat. Power would come on at 1200-6500 rpms. When most people say there car drives like stock, the LPE 383 does just that and would like to keep that and step up a little. If I change the cam I would also do headers at the same time.

I have been in a g5x3 car and it was VERY driveable and fast. Obviuosly an auto is a little different. I would shoot LG an e-mail and get their opinion. They seem to make all big cams work pretty good. Good luck in your decision!

Haha, you're right, his LPE engine will last longer than my factor built LS6 that makes 50 more rwhp w/ only a cam and headers?

Take that 383 back to LPE and tell them you want an LS6 long block so you can atleast make bolt on Z06 power..
