Well I got everything painted black except for the door handles and mirrors, and yellow73sb was taking a beating for stepin out towards the edge. I like the all black look. I say go for it and flare the wheels too.
I agree. Duntov, Mitchell, Shinoda and all the rest were racers and were constantly modifying their cars.
Yes, they were racers. And customizers. Well, maybe not Zora. He seemed to have a liking to mule-type vehicles that followed the old saying "shine she may, but run, she must".
If you look closely at that blue car, you will see something interesting. It is a '63 Sting Ray mule car. Notice the front fenderline and how the coves are "blotchy" where the fender blends into the cowl/firewall section to match the doors. Also, check the windshield and the "wing windows". Too bad there wasn't more of the car in the shot.
I like it because it is unique. Plus the black color pulls it off. Very minimalist. Does anybody remember the short story/movie "2 Lane Blacktop"? If you do, it captures the spirit here.
Besides - it is his to do with as he pleases.
Bman
Then you should paint it primer.
Two Lane Blacktop was a street racer built for one purpose - beat the other guy. There were few creature comforts in it. There was nothing for looks. I remember reading once that it was painted black primer so it would disappear into the night easier for a street racer trying to get away from the police in a busted drag race.
If that is the look you are after, then dechrome it completely and lost the wheels. Paint them flat black.
Unnecessary chrome to be painted black. Like the windshield chrome, door handles, and rocker moldings. Also some big wheels and nice brake rotors and calipers.
Keep the chrome bumpers
And maybe add the chrome gills
Basically this nails it
I don't see all that much difference. I don't like the wheels, but I doubt I'd like the wheels anywhere on anything. Maybe I'd like a different wheel on here.
I also agree that this works in black, but if you were to try this in red or yellow, I think the painted chrome/stainless sections would look wrong. BTW, the rocker on a '68 is black. There is a thin line of chrome to accent the lines of the body. Without it, you lose the tucking in of the lower body.
I, too, agree the red calipers need to go. They look out of place with the black.
I like your last sentence. I have a numbers matching 1967 Nova SS ( Pic attached) and a 73 Vette that I did bring back from the dead! It has the original drive train, but not what it took to bring it back to original. So I went the route of being different, but still recognizable as a "C3" - guess which one I like to play with most??

The other thing that I think would make this car pop would be a really nice custom Black & Red interior. That's where I would take this car next.
On the other hand I love a nice original muscle car. I have a friend doing his second SERIOUS custom C2 (63) and I love his taste. He also has a NCRS 65. I like both a lot. It just depends on how the custom is done. His 63 is about 70% done. That bad boy is gonna be sweet! 1000 hp, tube frame and the best of everything. Even did C6 door handles on it. Has old look with a hint of new. All new technology as far as what's underneath.
It's all personal taste. There is nothing wrong with a mod if it was a wreck to begin with. if it's a nice original...my opinion is leave it alone and go find something else to mod.

BTW...I like your car like that. It does look pretty slick. But, I too like the 68-73 "chrome-vintage" look. BUT...I'm not a NCRS snob either. I have kept my 80 all stock/factory in appearance but...the engine, brakes, suspension/shocks, electronics are definitely modern.
I'm more into changing my car's performance than its looks.
..and for the record, I am all into doing what you want to do with YOUR ride, but that setup above is not for me. The wheels are too big for the mono chomatic thing just takes away from the ride. Trust me when I tell you it will KILL resell...and at some point you WILL sell your ride......
You guys that get your panties in a wad if somebody swaps radiator caps on their Vette crack me up. Here's a few pics showing what Zora and the boys were doing to sharks back in the late 60s. Guess they weren't worried about resale value.
