Florida voters may wish to make your feelings known -- Florida state senator Steve Oelrich, a former Alachua county sheriff, has proposed legislation that would make radar detectors illegal in the state.
From: Slower than a speeding bullet................ Fort Lauderdale, FL
Personally, I favor this legislation. I think this endangers other lawful drivers. It has been proven, as speed increases, so do accidents.
There are too many idiots driving in Florida- maybe this will help.

well I disagree as it has been proven that slow drivers (below speed limit) are the cause of just as many accidents as well as road rage...besides I dont think 10 over is a tragedy we aren't talking about running 120 flat out just because we have a radar detector.....fortunately we have PRC to discuss it
lived half my life in Miami:
1. Driver -road course -exams for anyone over 70 -I'm 62!!
2. How about the famous right hand turn from the left lane that I saw a million times a day,
3. How about the plastic-haired old bats driving Mercedes, talking on the phone, doing makeup on their way to meet the gardener.

Police Officers cause a lot of accidents too... not their fault, but they do... I can't count the number of times I've seen a group of cars tooling along in the fast lane, and then they see a trooper hiding out somewhere in the median/side of road, and they all slam on their brakes... causing people to have to swerve out of their fast lane and almost into me / other cars.
Of course my radar detector went off a mile back so I knew to slow down and pull over to the right lane.

I'm ambivalent on this issue. I've seen everything listed above in the 29years I've lived in SE FL. I've also seen LEO abuse their use of radar/laser equipment.
I have the BelPro detector and it is very prominent when looking into the vette. If the legislation does pass, well, there are "invisible" installations available.

Have never seen a study that shows this, all studies of states that have raised interstate limits have seen no change or a DECREASE in accidents. The main cause of injury accidents are slow drivers impeding the flow of traffic, causeing other drivers to make lane chages or abrubt manuvers to avoid the idiot hogging up the fast lane. Just look at the Autobahn in Germany, one of the safest highways in the worl, avg speed is arpound 100MPH.

Isn't Alachua County (especially US 301 through Waldo and Lawtey) known for their speed traps?
Shame on them.
Well keep in mind this state senator was formerly Alachua County Sheriff, 1992-2006. So if the likes get their way more and more laws will be added.
This is ridiculous. WTF is a republican doing adding more laws and more government which is contrary to their party? Same goes for the prez. Yet we all sit, B&M about more laws, more government enacted upon us and wonder how it is happening. It is insane that we keep electing people who feel they need to do something in office, make a name for themselves, put up legislature (more government on the backs of the citizens) so they can have bills under their name so they can get re-elected for the free ride. Instead of trimming government they keep creating more!
The folks of Alachua county have a representative that is introducing a bill for law to micro manage every other person and visitor to this state.
Just because a driver has a radar detector is does not mean that person is going to be speeding. It is nice to know when an officer is painting you or the area, it nice to get notices about up coming traffic on some systems, it's nice to know an emergency vehicle is approaching, instead of driving blindly!

Radar traps are just to produce revenue. It has nothing to do with slowing people down. If the state really want to slow drivers down they would put more troopers on the roads. I tend to notice that folks slow down when patrol cars are actually on the highway...but the state can't make money with troopers driving on the roads...
Waldo is one of the most famous "speed traps" in the country. AAA used to mark it on their "trip tiks"-don't know if they still do.
There are speed limit signs all over the place. Within a short distance the legal speed drops fast. As long as you expect it the towns are relatively quick to get by without a ticket.

Hardly a days goes by when I don't see an elderly person either in a wreck or nearly causing one.
If people in the left lane were only passing and then getting out of the way, the roads would be safer. Over the past 2 days I drove from Jacksonville to Ft Lauderdale and back. I passed more people on the right than the left.
Speed is dangerous but I'll take my chances. Get the hell out of my way.

I can't count the number of times I have a loud conversation with myself in the car about how everyone should only be in the left lane for a total of 10 seconds, to pass the car in front of you, and then get back over to the right. Even if you feel like driving 80, do the slalom course of switching lanes, so when the even bigger a-hole going 100 in the left lane doesn't have to slam on the brakes.
STAY RIGHT EXCEPT TO PASS!! THOSE SIGNS MEAN SOMETHING!
This has just been proposed and up for vote in Florida, but should this pass there will be more States to follow for sure. Unbelievable.
This could be the start of a new trend in this country. I have heard of several states considering this, but it is now proposed for a vote in Florida. Maybe this will end the detector debate.

Radar detectors would be prohibited in Florida under a bill filed by a Florida lawmaker and former sheriff. The proposal, introduced by state Senator Steve Oelrich, would make it illegal to use a radar detector. But the measure would make using one a secondary, non-criminal traffic violation. That means that law enforcement officers could not stop you just because you have a radar detector in your car.If an officer pulls you over for another traffic violation and they discover a radar detector, they can then issue you a ticket. The legislation has the support of the Florida Highway Patrol, which says radar detectors have no other purpose than to help speeders avoid traffic tickets.
