Default Question for Virginians

There is a chance I may be taking a sales job with my territories being VA and West VA. It looks as if VA will be the place best to live. The territory excludes the VA suburbs of DC. I am guessing that Richmond is the best place to live (most central).

JUst trying to get a lay of the land. How far from Richmond are most of the other main cities? Would have loved to live in VA Beach but that looks to be to far on the edge of the territory.

What are good places to live near Richmond?

Appreciate the help and if the job goes thru, looking forward to meeting my Vette cohorts in VA.

Keep your yankee azz up north! J/k, I will be the first to pre-welcome you to the area. If you are serving all of Virginia (excluding the DC area), Richmond might be a good place to find a house. But, you have to look at the cost of living in a big place like Richmond. And also all the traffic you will be dealing with. I dont know how great of a location Charlottesville would be, but they would be more central geographically I believe. A little closer to WV yet still only about 2 hours from Hampton Roads. Just my $0.02

What are the main cities outside of NoVA that you are referring to? Not trying to suggest there aren't any, rather VA is a wide state, so what area are you thinking of?

Virginia is a wonderful place to live. I've lived here all my life and I don't really appreciate all that we have here until I travel to other parts of the country. We have mountains and beaches all within a few hours of each other. We have large cities including the Nation's Capitol within a few hours drive of any where in the state as well as beautiful countryside and farm land.

Richmond is an excellent choice especially if you have to travel for work. Several major interstates intersect at Richmond, I95, I85, I64. In an hour and half you can be on I81 running north and south in the western part of the state. West Virginia is a bit of haul from Richmond but with the proper planning you could set up a trip to cover that side of the territory.

I would look on the west side of Richmond along I64 (maybe even as far as half way to Charlottesville). Depending on how rural you want your home area to be you don't have to go far out of town to be in the country and still have a short drive to get to all the things that Richmond has to offer. There is lots of new development out that way and the area is very nice.

This is a great time to have to relocate to Virginia. The housing market has made a big correction in the last 8 to 10 months and right now it is a buyers market with lots of good deals being made.

And as far as Corvettes go Virginia has several Corvette clubs and a very active group from here on the Forum. Come and join us, I think you will find Virginia very much to your liking.

If you have any more questions just shoot me a pm, I'll be glad to talk to you.

I would say the Richmondish (or just outside) area. Would be the most central part I think.

Would love another Vetter down here at the Beach, but I think your thought about being at the edge of the territory and lots more "on the road...take longer to get places" is right.

Ha ha, already getting ready for the Yankee comments. My sis is acutally going to law school at UVA - that is Charlottesville right? Well I will be a financial wholesaler so any place where there are brokers. I figure in Richmond I am right by an airport to fly to West Va. I am guessing that the real estate can't be as bad as here in NJ. Looking for a nice middle-class, central place to set up shop/call home.

Wayne,

Thanks for the rundown and kindness. I really wanted to live close to the beach but VA Beach area is probably to far out of the center of the region. How far out from Richmond is Charlottesville? Yeah I fugured that the housing market has gotten better - problem is I just bought a condo here in NJ 4 months ago so I am probably taking a loss on it unless I decide to keep and rent.

I'll find out more this week as I move into the 2nd interview.

Charlie,

If you can fly to WVA Richmond is exactly where you want to be. I would still look on the West End even though that is on the opposite side from the airport. That is a very middle class area and as you head out of town a little the home prices will drop of progressively.

And yes UVA is in Chatlottesville. That is about an hour west of Richmond on I64.

Yeah they wanted me to take a territory in the central part of the US but as an avid surfer I told them I need to be driving distance to the beach.

Yeah I figured I'd fly out to WVa most likely once a month. Any place to cheat closer to the beach from Richmond?

You can check the Williamsburg area. That is about half way to the beach from Richmond. I believe you will find homes in that area a little higher priced but it is a very nice area.

Cool - I'm sure they'd fly me down prior to moving to check out the area. I'll mark that one down as another place to look at.

Appreciate the help.

I am also in sales - covering most of Va south of Fredericksburg and east of Roanoke.

While the beach sounds appealing and I do enjoy visiting there, the traffic is pretty tough. The Tidewater has twice the population of Richmond with probably 1/2 the roads. Not bad compared to DC, but more than my liking, especially with the tunnel.

I live in the west end of Richmond. Very nice out here. A little pricey, but the schools are top notch and building codes make everything look nice. Even here will be a drop in the bucket compared to the cost of living in NJ. 4,000sqft house will be apx $600-700k.

From Richmond, you will have about a 2 hour drive to get to the other 'major' cities.

Williamsburg is also very nice, but don't expect much of a nightlife. I consider it a quiet golf community.

Dave,

Thanks for the info. What towns west of Richmond should I look at?

(BTW, half my family went to Clemson )

I live in Yorktown ( 5 miles south of Williamsburg)
1 hour to the beach
2 hours to the outer banks
1 hour to Richmond/drag racing
2.5 hours to Charlottesville
3 hours snow skiing
3.5 hours road racing in Danville @ 3.27 mile track

This should help

My wife is a realtor, if you're interested I'll PM you her work e-mail address. Even if she doesn't sell you a house because where you are looking isn't her territory, she'll make sure you get a good one and follow up to make sure you're taken care of. She can't stand a realtor who's not working for you... Must be a German thing..

I live in Yorktown as well, moved here in '92 and have loved it. If I had my way, I'd move out to the Charlottesville area around Gordonsville. Lots of country and wineries. However, Toano, just west of Williamsburg isn't bad either. Houses are a lot cheaper than Yorktown or Williamsburg and it is still close to the beaches and the Patrick Henry IAP in Yorktown or the Richmond IAP. Hope you make it down here. You can go ahead and leave your snowblower up there, we don't get much snow down here (thought the mountains get enough for skiing).

I live in Short Pump - apx. 15 miles west of Richmond. Richmond has that small town feel, but has everything that you can ask for. ...just not too many Vettes that race...
