Sold an electrical part to a guy. He said his mechanic told him it was broken and wants to return it. Normally “no” for electrical, but I agreed. Five months go buy and no return, no communication and suddenly the part shows up on my doorstep. Do you refund, tell him to pound sand, or somewhere in between?
I assume you can tell that it was sent recently and not simply lost in the mail for five months. If it were the latter, it's not his fault. I'd assume if it were the latter he would have been bugging you for his refund.
So, I'd contact him and ask him why he delayed sending the return.

I would check if he just recently shipped it, or if it did get lost in the mail. the label on the box is printed the day its mailed, so pretty easy to confirm. if it got lost in the mail, thats not his fault and I would refund.
if he just shipped it after this long, I would be very hesitant and I would want to test it myself. if its good, refund and its done. if it was bad. im not sure since he had 5 months to do his own testing and possibly break it. that would be the tough call
That guy is me. I had to buy two Multi Function Switches as a result. Pop sent me one that was non-functional from the start. I had to pay Mayhem Motorsports twice for installation. Once for the Broken switch and again for the Working Switch.
If Pop would have sent me a switch that worked from the start, we would not be having this conversation.
If you can confirm the part works and looks undamaged, I'd refund the money like you said you would and move on.
The Part NEVER worked. Mayhem Motorsports in NC can 100 percent confirm this. I was sent a broken and non-functional Multi-Function Switch. Mayhem Motorsports can verify all of this. I just want a refund and call it even. I sent the Switch back EXACTLY as was sold to me.

I really did not want to get into personal reasons but I will if that is what it takes.

Thanks for dropping by and introducing yourself much better than I ever could.
You just missed a point or two: you knew when you purchased that it was used, and the car’s symptoms were explained to you and that a new switch was installed with no benefit. Therefore the part MAY be ok, or may not, but no returns. You took a chance as you could not find another.
Once your mechanic told you it was faulty, the conversation was as you show. I relented and offered to refund. I don’t ever want to stick someone. I just think you should take some responsibility for your role. I think folks here see the picture. Some folks are just naturally vain.
