Lidatek's Laser ECHO looks like a worthwhile addition. On a C5 without front license plate, since it is no longer center-mounted, I wonder if a single transponder mounted behind one of the front grills would be sufficient, or should two be used, one behind each left/right? I emailed them a while back, but they haven't responded. Anyone here have one of these units installed? Are you satisfied with its performance so far? http://www.lidatek.com/
I believe that the best area for the Lidatek mount would be as far up front as possible. I had my Laser Echo mounted to the factory (Lidatek) license frame in my 68 for the last two years or so. The aperture lens must be in a position that allows it to "see" the beam. If it is mounted too far into the bumper, the direct beam will not "hit" it directly.
I have dismounted the LE when I sold my 68 and have been contemplating the best mounting position in my C5. I'm a bit hesitant to cut a hole in the front cover, but feel that this would be the best position for the aperture lens.
I have spoken to the folks at Lidatek in the past and they have been very helpful, so I'll give them a call today to see if they have any suggestions. You should be hearing back from me later on.
I stand corrected. I just got off the phone with Andy, a Lidatek applications specialist, who explained that the transponder (with aperture lens) may be mounted away from the front of the car (6-inches or so is normally acceptable). He explained that should you decide to keep the C5 factory cover (where the license plate would reside), then you would need two transponders for total protection. Although he has not closely examined the "grill" area of a C5, he believes that this area would be an acceptable place to mount the transponder.
The bad news is that extra transponders aren't cheap, since they carry the expensive components in them. The Laser Echo kit contains the display box, one transponder and a license plate frame-mount for $350. An extra transponder runs $289. Now if you wanted to cut a rectangular hole in your front cover, you'd only need one transponder.
In all likelyhood, laser will not reflect sufficiently off of a C5 cover, so the officer would tend to aim at the front fog lights or running lights. This is why if you do not have your front plate mounted, you need either one transponder in the center or one at each corner.
A word of caution: Some states, such as CA, have laws that make using ANY type of jamming device illegal. Mounting position is critical!
I have LaserEcho front and rear, was installed by pro.......Hole in front "cover" for transponder to "see"..........can be seen in pic in "sig" , if you look real close, also at "website" pics.........the rear is mounted in provided lic. plate frame, which looks real good, but no pic of "rear sys." at web site............sys. works very well....... :yesnod:
