Here's another possible idea. Aren't the brackets on the sides, side specific ? It's been so long since I installed mine, I can't remember right off hand if they are or not, what makes me think this is the picture Fred posted of the side of one, if you look where it's circled it indicates L which makes me think it's for the left side, if you haven't already tried swapping these you might look and see if yours is the same as what's shown here.
i have them correct.. Even if you were able to swap the sides around they are not the problem... its where the inside of the metra dash kit rest against and around the face of the radio.. .I even took the side pieces off today to check everything and set the metra face onto deck..
Since the radio has hardly any chin or step , it causes radio to not set into the metra kit deep enough.. The metra front face is resting as tight as it can against the outer face of the head unit..

Ok, well crap, I'm out of ideas then, and I've since looked at the instructions for it and seen where they can really only go one way, perhaps you just gotta bad one which I guess wouldn't be impossible.

It is the same metra kit i had with my last 2 radio's in same car. They were pioneer to,, but its this new head unit is pretty flat across the face with only a 1/8 inch of chin .
I put my old pioneer AVH5700 back in this afternoon and all good again..So im returning the new deck. Actually hated the new one as most of the time you cant read the screen when the suns out .And on my old one i can angle the screen.

Since you are returning the head unit, if you decide to get another model, look for one that has a capacitive touch screen. A capacitive touch screen is brighter with better graphics and handles the sun better than the resistive touch screens. Still not perfect in the sun but better, and also a much better overall screen.

Well that's really odd considering Double DIN is an industry standard, one would think it would fit any Double DIN deck.
