The mute wire is for OnStar. Basically sends a signal to mute the head unit when OnStar is being used. I'm not sure how that would effect your issue but I guess anything is worth a shot at this point. Also a couple of other things to check.
1- Try the parking brake procedure NBVette mentions
2- Make sure your crimp connection to the red o-ring terminal is good and the actual bare wire has a good connection to the o-ring and not the plastic (parking brake wire)
3- Your owners manual mentions that "it is necessary to register the cell-phone in this unit before using the Bluetooth function". It gives the steps to register it into the head unit before moving on to the steps "select device" that you mention. It seems a little confusing to me and redundant, but at this point I would try to strictly follow the steps the manual lays out.
That should be a 1 time thing, if it worked. Basically the first time you connect the head unit.
Thanks Fred. I'll try these things tomorrow evening. Tonight is date night with the wifey.
If this issue really is the way you have to connect to this Kenwood, I'm very unimpressed. I've been connecting my phone to various BT head units for years. It should be an intuitive procedure.

If you get everything working, it will be worth it in the end. But yeah, not off to a good start.

Yeah, I know connecting my iPhone to my Pioneer was a piece of cake.
OK, I figured out part of the problem. The paper copy of the user manual that came with the unit doesn't include info about registering a devise. Here's a pic of the table of contents. So although I've tried to follow "the manual" it doesn't seem to be the complete manual. I will use the link you guys provided.
1. Just for the heck of it, I removed screw and soldered the crimp connector to the left green park switch wire to remove any possible doubt about this questionable connection.
2. I re-connected the brown wire loop off the interface with solder and shrink tube.
3. I tried the parking brake procedure of brake on, off then back on while car is running
4. Held mouth just right.
There doesn't seem to be any special page to go to register device. There is the BT setup page thst I've opened and I've opened up my phone and scanned for devices. "Select device" is grayed out... as always. Loving this Kenwood so far.
What happens when you open bluetooth settings on your phone? Does your phone see the Kenwood?
Also, try plugging your phone into usb again before and during pairing procedure. Hopefully firmware update helps?
Last resort, may need to locate or purchase a sledgehammer. It may not fix the bluetooth issue but it will help alleviate some frustration.
One last thing, you can try calling Kenwood. I called them once with a question and I was surprised how quickly I was ale to get someone on the phone to help. It may be worth a try.

Phone doesn't see Kenwood. It's like the HU is locked into "driving mode".
That's a great final plan Fred. I have a good sledgehammer if needed.
VinceC5 reached out and offered to return it for me for a refund(props to him). I'll offer it to the local Audio shop before I do that in hope that might give me what I paid for it and save the return shipping. The shop will test it before they purchase it. I'm not totally convinced that it's the HU but maybe just something funky with the integration of the HU, interface and car.
Much thanks to all. I haven't given up yet.... but getting close.... again.
I just got off the phone with Kenwood. They were very easy to get ahold of and I was talking with someone within a minute or two. She said there is no firmware update for this unit and recommended that I re-initialize the unit. If that doesn't work then I will need to return it to them for repair under warranty or return it to the store I purchased it from. I hope to to re-initialize this evening. Will keep you posted.
Steps to Initialize are:
Menu > Set-Up > Special > Initialize > Yes

That's a good idea.
That's good Kenwood was easy to get a hold of. I'm out of ideas at this point, hopefully re-initializing will solve your problem.
As much as I'd love to lie and say that Initializing resolved the issue.... I believe the issue was operator error. I think because I already have 4 other devices on my "Paired devices" list, I could not see the "Available devices" without scrolling to the bottom of the page. I really appreciate all of the help working through this and I apologize for any time you wasted helping me figure this out what seems to be a silly oversight on my part.

That's great to hear, don't worry, **** happens, I'm just glad you got it working. So you have the parking brake bypassed again also and everything fine ?

No worries, we suspected operator error all along.

Correct. I haven't driven the car yet but parking brake is bypassed and I don't believe I'm locked out of anything.
