Well...this has been quite entertaining...some laughs, some wit, and yes, some very good techincal information. At this point I'm in a quandry, wheather to let this post run, or send it to the bone yard, or just send Alex packing...
Actually, Alex's writing style bears a close resemblence to Dep's. Say it ain't so, Joe...but I will get to the bottom of this mystery
I'm supprised it hasn't been locked yet... but I suppose it is harmless, and a lot more profitable than ANYTHING in off-topic.
Lets see some pics of this machine worthy of 4000 dollar rotors.I go overboard too but that is beyond what I would spend on rotors.Iam spending 8000 on an alum block ,so I guess it is all in what you want.
Don't let the masses know you are spending that much or they'll pack like hyenas on your back! I don't know who gets more mad when I spend money on my vette, these members or my wife. It's a toss up!
Techno, below is speaking logically. What, am I the first sick bastard here to spend more money on his vette than he should?
I only read the 1st and this page but it sure seems like the guy is getting beat up on spending 4 grand for a performance item.
Lets see
Paint job 4-10 grand?
rims and tires 4-6 grand?
Theres more but the way I look at it if 33 lbs wins you a race then its worth the piddlin amount of money.
If it don't then its the same as spending 4 grand on rims that are spoda save you weight and don't win you a race. After all what do 4 grand rims do for you? Make it look better? Can't see that on the track.
I dropped a 10 large ones on my 68, all in parts, including the 533 cube BB...and I saved a ton by doing the work myself...so...it's all how you wanna spend your cash...me...I made my ride pretty, and capable holding my own against 95% that's on the road in Cleveland. Who am I to judge how one should spend his bucks...hell...I went overboard on the rims...shoulda waited and gotten 17" and some 35 Yoko tires...
I have noticed that a fair share of corvette owners here roadrace their cars and I was wondering if any of you have any knowledge of the effectiveness of titanium rotors, like Red Devil sells. I know that they cost $4000 for a set and they remove about 33 pounds. So far I have heard bits and pieces of contradictory information and I was wondering if anyone here knows the real deal.
I think it would be much cheaper for the driver to loose 33lbs.
Back to the ridicule, hey? I have a digital camera and I have 2 corvettes. However, I don't have anything to prove to anyone here and I could care less what some of you critics say or think. Go on thinking I am a poser. That is fine with me. As of now the '68 is black, which is the color that it was when I bought it 20 years ago. After I am finished with the tranny install, I am going to have it painted, flares installed, wheels & tires upgraded, etc. I would rather post the pics when it is finished. It also has a tilt nose on it now, which I am replacing with stock in the painting process. When I bought it, it had that tilt nose on it and I never liked it. The '82 I have is purely stock, 2 tone (white on top, silver on bottom) with only 39k miles on it. It was my sister's car that she bought new in '82. She decided to sell it and it bothered me after having it in the family for so many years, so I bought it off of her.
As I said earlier, the titanium brakes have several advantages, one of which is substantial weight loss. Braking distances are greatly reduced as well. Acceleration is enhanced.
In my opinion, money always finds a way to escape. At least if I put it into my car, I can see where it ran to.
However, I don't have anything to prove to anyone here and I could care less what some of you critics say or think.
Nice that you don't care (or maybe you do care, since you "could care less"), but 99.9% of members that read even one page of this tripe are convinced you are either Dep or some teenager with way too much free time. Pics might change that percentage, but not by much at this point.
I may have missed this in the bazillion pages of posts on this topic, but what kind of calipers do you intend to use with the titanium rotors? You can shed even more weight by using the SSBC aluminum calipers, or Willwoods.
The calipers I plan on using are also made by Red Devil. They are 6 piston, aluminum calipers in anodized red. They are not cheap, but they will be compatible with the rotors, should I decide to get them. At the present I think that I will buy them. I have other things to do first, however. I just located an aluminum bellhousing yesterday, made by Lakewood. Once I get it, I can put in the 5 speed tremec. Soon afterward I will buy the brake setup.
As I stated several times, I have a '68 vette with an LS6 crate big block with the modifications that I listed. If anything that I claimed is found to be untrue, you win. I also have a 1982 vette with 39k miles. If this is found to be untrue, you win. There are several ways I can verify this information for such purposes.
GDaina, thank you for the support. It is appreciated.
