I brought my 76 home today. I went out to the garage a few hours later and noticed a gasoline smell. I looked underneath to see if there were any leaks (there werent) but I did notice a cable/wire dangling under the bumper. Looks like it goes up above the spare tire. It looks like its black and yellow, the end is a big plastic female piece with 3 plug holes in it.
Looks like it goes to the tail lights. One looks like a ground connected to the frame. A green wire going to the passenger tail light, another one to the driver's side.
But what is this supposed to plug into? There has to be another loose cable somewhere...

Looks like a plug for trailer lights. Wagon your smell could be coming from anywhere. A leaking fuel line or a small crack in the tank etc. If there is no fuel on the ground after being parked it could be very hard to find.

I thought of that, but then I tried to think of who would use a Vette to haul a trailer... All of the lights function properly, so Im confused...
The smell isnt spreading into the house (so far) and once you are out there for about a minute, you dont really notice it anymore.
The gas smell depends on how bad it is, if it disapates in a few minutes I would not wory about it, but if the smell remains strong it could ignite when you crank the car .

OK, great, now Im scared to drive it.
Its not overly powerful (to me) when I walk in the garage, and it becomes virtually unnoticable within a minute of being in there. Still dont see any wet spots on the floor.
I also drove it for 2 hours from the dealer to my house. I never even caught so much as a faint wiff of gas. Only now in the garage after several hours.

Just open your garage door and let it air out before you start the car!
Is your Evaporative Vapor Canister (EVC = charcoal canister) hooked up properly. Maybe your just venting to the garage instead of the canister. Also, If your vent valve is defective you could have filled the tank too full and flooded the canister.
The GAS smell is coming from your gas cap.... there is a rubber ring " or should be" underneath the cap to seal it when you twist to tighten.
ACE hardware sells a thin rubber pad that is perfect to cut your own gasket out. I think it sells for about 1.87
So lift the lid and look to see if its wet from taking corners and sloshing around in there, It might also be drainng from the drain hose connected to the rubber surrounding gas cap that catches overflow.
luerja: I did fill it up on the way home today. I checks the gas cap, and it appears it may have been a little wet. The plastic screw part appeared shiny as if wet. Wiped it with my finger and my finger stunk too (that sounds funny )
I just opened the garage to let it air out a bit. Ive also read that the winter mix gas can contribute to this smell.
Also, when I crawled under the car to look at that loose cable, I didnt smell any gas.

Well if your gas tank gives you stink finger then you have to use a new rubber gasket back there. the overflow hose usally come down between the gas tank and rear taillight panel. It will be a rubber hose about 1/2" round.

I've got one of these too, I looked around to see if a trailer hitch had ever been on the car and can't find any traces of one so I just tucked the wire under the bumper.
