Well, I did top it off when I filled it up. It was on E and the pump shut off after about $25 bucks. So I gave it another squeeze or 2.

Is your Evaporative Vapor Canister (EVC = charcoal canister) hooked up properly. Maybe your just venting to the garage instead of the canister. Also, If your vent valve is defective you could have filled the tank too full and flooded the canister.
My 76 had this problem. The canister is located in the drivers side front fender under the master cylinder. Make sure the hoses are connected and a new filter in the bottom. Almost impossible to get to this thing.
