Dangling Cable
I brought my 76 home today. I went out to the garage a few hours later and noticed a gasoline smell. I looked underneath to see if there were any leaks (there werent) but I did notice a cable/wire dangling under the bumper. Looks like it goes up above the spare tire. It looks like its black and yellow, the end is a big plastic female piece with 3 plug holes in it.
What does this go to?

I bought my 80 vette a couple of weeks ago and also it's smells like gasoline in the garage. I've look for leaks and can't find any.
I have to open the garage doors to air it out. The smell is over whelming.
Does anyone know where the smell/leak is coming from?

Looks like it goes to the tail lights. One looks like a ground connected to the frame. A green wire going to the passenger tail light, another one to the driver's side.
But what is this supposed to plug into? There has to be another loose cable somewhere...

Looks like a plug for trailer lights. Wagon your smell could be coming from anywhere. A leaking fuel line or a small crack in the tank etc. If there is no fuel on the ground after being parked it could be very hard to find.

I thought of that, but then I tried to think of who would use a Vette to haul a trailer... All of the lights function properly, so Im confused...
The smell isnt spreading into the house (so far) and once you are out there for about a minute, you dont really notice it anymore.
How serious/urgent a repair is this?

.OK, great, now Im scared to drive it.
Its not overly powerful (to me) when I walk in the garage, and it becomes virtually unnoticable within a minute of being in there. Still dont see any wet spots on the floor.
I also drove it for 2 hours from the dealer to my house. I never even caught so much as a faint wiff of gas. Only now in the garage after several hours.

Is your Evaporative Vapor Canister (EVC = charcoal canister) hooked up properly. Maybe your just venting to the garage instead of the canister. Also, If your vent valve is defective you could have filled the tank too full and flooded the canister.

The GAS smell is coming from your gas cap.... there is a rubber ring " or should be" underneath the cap to seal it when you twist to tighten.
ACE hardware sells a thin rubber pad that is perfect to cut your own gasket out. I think it sells for about 1.87
So lift the lid and look to see if its wet from taking corners and sloshing around in there, It might also be drainng from the drain hose connected to the rubber surrounding gas cap that catches overflow.

Also, when I crawled under the car to look at that loose cable, I didnt smell any gas.

I aired the garage out for a little, then checked the smell again. Faint gas smell that quickly disappeared. My brother-in-law didnt notice it.
But now it appears I have a small oil leak.
