i dont think the selemoid is the problem...it's the angle of the pull for the latch.... you might hace to install a small pulley for the cable to change direction to get a better angle on the pull......
panic..... if that section was to be cut, i think it would look cool only if the back window came out.... sort of a like a large seat hoop idea.....

what about getting rid of that rear window altogether and making of a t-top car a roadster with a rollbar? i've been figuring how would the car look but i'm not able to make a decent photoshop....
