Chevy Orange? What else could you have been told?
What color was it originally, and have you seen any original cars? What Chassis restoration guide do you have?

Well it depends,
4sp 350's should have some orange paint overspray.
4sp 454's the entire bellhousing is painted orange.
Auto 350/454's have no overspray.

Thread resurrection - correct color?
Apologies for warming this up again, but I have the same question. I know orange is 'the' color, but wasn't blue used for a while?
I just stripped the BH of my 73 4spd and found blue paint under aluminum paint. And the numbers tell me it is original.
Comments anyone?

My 73 454 has blue heads on an orange block with orange overspary on the bell housing. Does that help?

I'm suspecting that the heads have been replaced on your engine?

So while the bell may have some paint, it's overspray. It was never really painted?

I talked with a couple of judges at Kissimmee this year.
They gave me some good hints on repainting the engine/bellhousing.
The bellhousing was painted bolted to the engine. The inspection cover was bolted up to.
It is painted completely, but not perfectly. Mine had some missed areas on it from the factory, made sure I duplicated them on the restoration.
Hope the picture helps some.

Nothing on my 72 454 4 speed has ever been repainted and the entire bellhousing is Chevy orange.
