If there is only one car on the course it is counted as a "driver improvement course" and is covered by regular insurance.
Call your agent and ask. Policies have been constantly evolving in the last year.
Also, if there are multiple cars on the course it is covered as long as it is not a "competitive event". To make it non-competitive, there must be no timed laps.
Again ask, I have found that I was not covered. The payout on the Carrera GT crash in Fontana will be in the millions, as the passenger was a very successful person who was just getting a "ride". Insurers are realizing that the specialty car market can probably take a few tacked on extras to the policy for a bit more money...After all its a vintage car owner...
So in summary: Parking lot autocross = covered
Road course day with no clocks = covered
Road course with timed laps = not covered
Drag racing = not covered (2 cars, timed)
As I have been told, its closed course period. Even a BMW driver clinic or Driving instruction on any road course was not covered on my current policy for the BMW. Everyone should get on the phone and check individually. In the meantime assume you are not covered and plan accordingly until you know you are. I'm just trying to help.
You could be right in that some insurance companies play hard ball.
I just spent the last 20 minutes carefully reading my policy. Interestingly enough, they do not exclude racing from coverage. According to my policy I'm covered even during timed racing events (by them not excluding it).
They do state they will not cover any damage to my car caused by nuclear devices, whether fired intentionally or unintentionally. Somehow I doubt I'll worry too much about the car if a nuke goes off right next to me.
