I have to agree with the others the C-3 will be worth more than the C-5 in five years.

cars are made to drive and enjoy. dont keep a car because of what it might be worth in a few years. that means you are planning on selling it anyway. not buying a car that you like and will enjoy driving because it might not be worth as much as the car you are thinking about selling just doesnt make sense to me. ( i hate trailer queens, can you tell? ) life is very short, enjoy it, and get what makes you happy. that being said. i would keep the c-3 myself because of the fact they are not as common and the time you have into it. the fun factor is also great. you will regret selling the c-3 but not because of the resale factor but because you will miss having it. i was going to sell my c-3 to get my first c-5. i am glad i didnt. now do whatever you have to do to get your wife to let have both because the c-5 z06 is a great car. i got a 2002 z with 8000 miles last year and it is a great d/d car. the c-3 is my toy and i will never sell it. i will never get out of it what i have in it and i dont care. the c-5 will be sold when it is time for a newer d/d. that will be a c-7 more than likely.

Not to hijack this thread, but do you guys really think this is true? I mean, IMHO, a C4 isn't even in the same league as a C5. I think C5s will keep their value a lot better than C4s.

Just curious what you guys think.

check prices on 97 C5. Seen them way under 20K. It wasn't that long ago that a late model C4 was bringing that kind of money.

Take it from a guy whose been there - the secret is letting your wife drive the Z06. Her exact words when we were test driving our Z16, she was driving at the time... "If I'd know these cars were this much fun I'd have asked you to get one a long time ago." I almost fell out of the car! That was about noon, the car was in my garage by 1.

I love my C3 and I love my Z but the best is when the entire family (we have two daughters as well) joins in with both cars for a family cruise!

I understand what you're saying about the Z06 - they are stink fast but your 68 rocks and you've got some blood, sweat and tears in that baby...my advice, keep them both! It was a simple fiancial decision for us, we decided our kids didn't need to go to college! Best of luck in your search/decision!

I agree with you, C5 prices are dropping but not as hard/fast as the C4's did. IMHO this is because the C5's were a shorter production run, 8 years vice 13 years for the C4, and the C5 platform launched some great technological advances. Also factor in last of the pop up headlights, three body styles, return of the Z06, etc, etc - just a world class car! Not to hammer the C4s but the only one's I'd like to have are a GS or ZR1.

This is a decision that effects your household's net worth, so consider Corvette ownership as part of an investment portfolio, and let's call the '68 "Asset A" and the C5 "Asset B".

The near and long term prospects for Asset A appreciating are very good, so long as you tend to it, making it a sound investment. The near term pospects for appreciation of Asset B aren't quite as good, but in the long term will probably come around. So, divesting from Asset A to re-invest into Asset B poses the risk that you could adversely effect the growth of your future net worth.

Now, assuming you can truly afford both, keeping the '68 would leave a sound investment in place, and getting the C5 would add diversification to this part of your portfolio, not to mention the extra fun you'll have.

But, if you have to sell Asset A to obtain Asset B, do you believe that the additional enjoyment Asset B could bring will be a sufficient offset to the impact it will have down the road on your bottom line? If not, you may come to regreat getting rid of the '68 to make room for the C5.

Of course, you could always call one of them "hers". Hope you can swing it.

many around the 15K range and wait until the new C7 comes out. they are just used cars like any other with large production numbers, they will continue to drop. only ones that may hold value are possibly the ZO6 and other special models. good news for many becaue the C5 is a nice car

Sperkins, Think you should hold on to the '68. the c5 will continue to drop in value for a while. The chrome bumpers will continue to increase in value as there is just so many of them left in your condition.

Forget value. Park the C3 next to the C5, step back, and grab a seat. Watch people walk by. Every time I drive my 79, someone gives me a compliment. Nice car, nice vette, cool car, I, my uncle, my cousin, insert relative here, had one once. But the favorite quote is, I had a Vette like that once, Damn, I shoulda kept it.

trade your wife for the C5. New wives are easier to find than 68's

come on scott... you just got that red beauty back together and man did it turn out nice. now is the time to enjoy that labor of love. if you have to get a c5 then make it so when time, money, wife permits. there are plenty of them out there for sale and dropping. i told my wife that a c6 is in the cards in a few years. who said you can't have your cake and eat it too....

KEEP AND ENJOY THAT BEAUTIFUL CAR! _____________ _______ ___

most of you guys seem to have overlooked one small detail , Z06. if you guys come across any 10 thousand mile Z06's for $13,000, please, let me know. a better way to evaluate the situation would be to consider the current value of the ZR1. it's way down. the last time i looked they could be had for somewhere between 15 to 20 grand. so, thats where i would expect the Z06 to be in 10 to 15 years.

now, where will your 68 be in 10 to 15 years? i hate to guess. i think that all C-3's are going to escalate sharply in the near future. they have reached the collectible point. they have gotten old enough now that people want to get them and hang on the them. we haven't reached 67 427 status by any stretch of the imagination, but, none the less we are going up.

now, where are you in all of this? right in the cat bird seat. the bumper cars are going to go silly. they are the only "real" muscle cars in the C-3 world. big horsepower , pre-emissions, pre-unleaded gas, 4-speed tire shredders. with great styling to boot.

from the financial/investment stand point i think you should keep what you have. but, if you want the Z06 i think you should sell the 68 and just go get it. you only live once.

Your car looks beautiful!
Forget about the C5
It may be faster, and have the creature comforts of a Caddy.

But your 68 Looks Mean, and is Raw! No comparison.

When you drive a vette Drive a VETTE! LOL

Keep the 68

***UPDATE***

Ok guys here it is. I drove the ZO6 yesterday and it is a very nice, clean and well maintained car. Basically it's brand new at 9,000 miles. If you're looking for a late model ZO6, it's for sale in the C5 for sale forum. The price is extremely reasonable and I wrote the guy a check to hold the car for me until I could contact my credit union. Last night I had a long talk with a good friend of mine and he really opened my eyes on another way to go about it. It looks like I'll be waiting a couple of more years for a late model vette and then I'll get to keep everything else that I have. Plus the wife will be happy so everybody wins.
