Has anyone ever tried to remove dye from an interior with any success?
Basically my interior was dyed black and was originally bright blue. I see some of the dye is slightly chipping off in some areas, such as the door pulls, but I was wondering if it is possible to actually remove the dye completely from all the hard plastic parts such as the dash pads, kick panels, windshield molding, etc.
yes you can definately remove interior dye fron interior parts. bulldog makes a plastic parts paint stripper called peeler . you can buy that at a parts paint and bodyshop supply store . when you get them stripped clean the parts whith a mix of 50% acrysol and 50% water. they also make a plastic parts primer that you can get in a spray bomb . ppg has a plastic parts adhsion promoter in a can to. what i do is after cleaning the part with the acrysol mix , i take a rag and lightly soak it with acrylic paint thinner and lightly rub the part down . after about 5 min apply a light coat of the adhesion promoter . the thinner opens up the plastic and ive never had an adhesion problem doing these steps . du pont has a vynal resin sytem you mix with the base thats real nice . sorry if this was long winded but just wanted to give you all the steps .
I'm thinking anything strong enough to remove the dye would probably trash the "grain" in the material. Also with respraying them there may be too thick of a coating and you will lose the grain(texture).

Vinyl dye does not "chip off". The dye penetrates the pores in the vinyl. Paint and other coatings can flake off. My guess is that the coating isn't dye, and you've got a lot of trouble on your hands. Any kind of stripper that would "melt" the coating would destroy vinyl. Your best bet would be to try different solvents on it in an area of the seat cover that doesn't show (lower right side on a driver's seat; lower left side of a pass. seat). Try putting a bit of solvent on a Q-tip and wiping a small area of the seat. If the coating comes off and doesn't distress the vinyl, you may have found a "winner". Try mineral spirits, alcohol, paint thinner, paint remover, etc. Good luck.
I used lacquer thinner to strip black off some blue 68 interior pieces, then wiped it down w/water real quick. It would have to be redyed in the blue, anyways, but it didn't really hurt the the grain. Then apply adhesion promoter, let set for about 15-20 minutes, and redye. It came out fine.
