That will make all owners of a 76 car smile , but I was surprised.
Recently a 78 pace car with less than 50 miles and still had the plastic protecting the interior brought only 30K
Except for the fact that they were making fun of the 74 thru 77 Vettes. Last statement as it rolled off the block was,"Very nice example of a not so very nice model car".
I watched the last 90 minutes of the broadcast last night. One of the last cars up was a 1964.5 Mustang coupe with a 260 V8. I know these cars pretty well. The guy with the microphone (you know, the one with the wealth of "knowledge" about vintage cars) didn't know squat about this car. He made several observations that were just completely uninformed. Made me wonder how much he really knows about any of the other vehicles crossing the stage. I thought that a number of those cars went for a lot more money than was warranted by their condition and/or their state of authenticity. BTW, did it seem like some of the auctions ended very rapidly when a particular number was reached while others went on forever looking for a higher bid until the auctioneer relented and finally declared the car sold?
Yeah, when they had the 95 Indy Pace car up there he referred to the 1982 Corvette Pace car earlier in the auction. Did not know there was an 82 Pace car?
I forgot that it was on, but now since I know, looks like my DVR will be full after this weekend.
mine too. then the wife stared to complain but then i told her that i could watch 5hrs. in about 1 and erase as i went along. then she was ok. boy talk about flying off the handle

Yes , I heard that comment also and think that it was un called for.
The people paying to have their cars sold are not paying BJ to slam their cars.

....
Hopefully they won't learn about the Vega steering wheel if there's ever another '76 up........
Here is my take on vettes going thru at Barrett...the early ones on Tuesday get screwed as there are less bidders...thats why two 78 Pace cars went 21k/25K...Wednsday things pick up a bit...more bidders...Thursday watch the 69's...On Sunday more sellers will get hammered..far fewer bidders plus, the cars aren't so great anyway...
Of course,Friday/Saturday are prime time..big money bidders and the tent will be packed...
Can't wait...I'll wave to the camera...
What kinda screwed up the day for me (night really) was seeing that 55 BelAir Chevy (which I thought was a 55 Chevy) go for $100k, only to find out it was just a fiberglass knock off with a crate motor, ford rear end, and a mustang II steering assembly..
What a joke.. What on earth made that car worth so much?
I will say, there are a lot of good buys in the last two days, and some very affordable stuff out there that I don't think anyone could even build for the price they went for. I think the announcers hit it on the head.. Barret's kinda lowered some standards, and has been allowing more and more stuff in that they would normally otherwise not. It's a good strategy... They are going to be getting into a whole new market of bidder..
Now the average joe can show up and bring home a car for under $20k. The only problem is, you still have to be $100k liquid just to get on the floor...

That car was built exactly the way a glass street rod is built with one exception - they used a later model body (the classic definition of a street rod is a pre '49 vehicle). The street rods are kinda funny at BJ. Some of them go for really good money and some of them go for about .50 cents on the dollar that it cost to build 'em. If you see one you really like and nobody bids it up you could get a screamin' deal. But as mentioned previously it only takes 2 bidders to get one up there. The high sellers typically have 2 guys that want it and they get into a pi$$ing match.
I didn't care for that '55 (I am an ex '55 2 dr hdtp owner) but I can appreciate how nicely it was built.
I think the bargain of the night last night was the guy that got the all steel '49 Merc conv. for ~ $38K. Wow - what a deal.
I'm going tomorrow afternoon with my 17 yr. old son. I'll post up some pics Saturday.

Gotcha... I agree on that 49' as well... While I'll certainly appreciate the work gone into that 55', I just cannot phathom why it went for more than a real 55' or 57' which also went up on the block...
Oh well, I still cannot figure out why anyone would pay what they did for that semi-engined trike...
I guess your pissing match analogy makes sense.. I know when my wife and I bought our house we ended up paying more than the seller was asking to out bid someone else.. We were tired of looking!

Agreed. I heard it too and it came off pretty arrogant.
They'd probably justify it by saying they were referring to build quility during that time period, but it seemed a little out of line.
My wife and daughter were watching the car that "looks like daddy's."
Don't get me wrong, I don't have thin skin, but the "great example of a not so great car" might have made them wonder why I spend so much time working on such a "not so great" car.
I noticed it wasn't the only car last night that they seemed to feel "above" giving too much positive attention to.
To each his own i guess.

Agreed and also they have crap to say about anything that is not 100% stock....

Very ture. I would have jumped on the Turbo Buick real quick.
I recall budget cars have always been offered just not televised. It seems BJ is correcting themselves for some of last years indescretions. They were busted for not allowing the full 3 minutes of auction time.
