Just a little confused...
I recently noticed that the Vin was mis-noted and now I'll have to call the DMV to correct it. Instead of xxxS4xxxx it reads xxxSHxxxx, noticed this trying to read the vin plate in the pillar of the car. it is starting to decompose...which leads to, can a new vin plate be made?
Also, on the trim tag it has M09. In my materials it shows the 68 being built from August 67 - July 68...? M would put it in August 68, right?
I have a friend who has a 327 engine that sparked my interest, as it would be awesome to make my car #s matching, or atleast all 68orig, if possible.

It sounds like the VIN plate has already been replaced...incorrectly. Having a 'wrong' digit in the VIN would almost guarantee that the car has been stolen and re-tagged. Since the numbers are molded into the VIN tag, it would be almost impossible for a legitimate VIN to be in error. And, if the car had been scrapped previously, one would only have to get a modified title...not re-tag the vehicle. I'm not sure how to advise you on this one. Sorry.

7T1: No it has the original VIN tag, as I noted it is just decomposing, thus one of the previous title changes brought about the error. I was actually interested in knowing if anyone has ever replaced a "decomposing" VIN tag with a new one, say "certified" at a GM dealer "on the record".
Avner: Thanks, I figured I was OK, but I couldn't find anything giving me a final build date of the last car, and the restore package only listed the build months through Sept which caused my question. Yes, my car was #75 from the end of the model year. Thus the reason I'm probably finding a few 69 parts on my car rather than 68, ie the dust shields mounted with x-mas trees vs staples.

When I purchased my 72 I bought it out of state. The title arrived before the car. I noticed while looking at the paper work something did not add up. I contacted the dealer I bought the car from and advised them. They had to take car to the local police department and look at it and comfirm the correct number.
I got worried and called the local police and advised them of the problem. They sent an officer over to look at the paper work and run both vin numbers. Both numbers came back ok.
The car was shipped and I waited 6 mths. before the title was corrected. Someone at a dmv placed a 5 where the S should have been.
I waited untill I got the correct title in my hand before I spent any more money on it. The dealer I bought the car from had to find where the mistake was made and have it fixed. The mistake was made 5 yrs. prior to the dealer buying the car and in another state.
I learned two things from this: Don't buy a car with out the title in hand when the money changes hands. And to compare what the vin tag says to the title.
You need to go to the dmv and get them to find the problem. Every state has to keep records and and they should be able to find the problem. You need to get this corrected before you sink anymore money into the car.
