I have 3 C3's, all red exterior black interior so you know which way I'm going to vote
Personally I think black looks better on 68 & 69 (70-72 weren't available in black) than on the later C3's. The exception is if you have fiberglass front and rear bumpers - if you're doing that, feel free to go black on the rubber bumper cars. If you're not doing that, the black will look terrible on your warping urethane factory bumper.
WOW that's awesome ! thanks guys I was in shock to see all the pics I got posted to look at. WOW I still don't Know the Black is so cool !!!!! but the red is just so sporty !!!!!!!! the red would be alot better to keep nice and would look better on the wavy bumpers. (i never have to wave at other vettes my bumpers do it for me) Im kinda thinking red right now but the black paint is $350.00 cheaper than the red paint. I have thought about blue, and at one time it was going to be blue with silver leather, but I want a big change, and its teal right now and thats to close to blue (i did not paint it teal I got it that way!) (what the heck was up with teal in the 90s?) anyway thanks and feel free to post more pics or give advice on the paint ........ Thanks 80shark
I really think it depends how neurotic you are. Black cars are the beautiful but if you are anything like me and cant stand swirl marks and seeing everything go with a lighter color...in your case red.
I wish my mental state would allow me to have a black car but I know I couldnt handle it. I tried twice and it drove me nutz
i would say go with red or SILVER,
I have a black jeep and it drives me crazy, you can see every speck of dust and swirl mark in the entire car.
I've got a red '68, ruby '93 and victory red '07 along with an '06 Miata in the victory shade of red. Then in black I've got an '07 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland, an '87 Mercedes 560SL roadster and an '03 Ford F-150 Harley Edition supercharged in black over silver. So you can tell I'm faced with the same black vs red quandry.
The red ones are definitely less trouble to keep up with and more forgiving to keep clean and swirl free. When clean and well polished (I clay bar the vettes periodically) they shine very nicely and get loads of attention.
But, you just can't beat the depth of shine you get from a well cared for black finish. If you've got the time, and a meticulous personality, the black can be the way to go...but with all my vehicles and only lil' old me to maintain them, I'm pretty well done keeping the black as highly polished as I once did. This is especially true since the entire northern half of the state of Georgia has been on water restrictions for almost a year now, so washing your car these days could get you lynched by the local water police.
Ultimately, I think a vette has got to be red.....
When I bought my '80, it was red - actually, several shades of red (Bubba paint job). I had it media blasted down to bare panels to get rid of Bubba's paint and paint it a nice metallic red. I discovered the original color was Dark Blue Metallic - which I think looks much better than red with an Oyster interior.
My wife had a black car. She washed it often because it showed any amount of dust. Even careful washing left swirl marks. She even used a power blower/dryer to avoid scratches from the chamois.
Red depends on what color of red and metallic or not. And don't forget about your interior. Personnally, I like contrasting but complimentary interior/exterior. Black exterior would be OK if you had a red, oyster, or doeskin interior. Red would be OK if you had oyster or black interior.
That's my opinion, and this is my blue-then-red-then-blue '80:
do what i did red on the outside black on the inside
The color of red I was going to use are like Brandywine and rsdoug have. IMO, there are too many typical RED cars out there. I wanted a color not quite so common.
