Default How to ID A 69 427 convertible

How do I determine if a 69 corvette convertible is a true 427 car if the numbers do not match. I was told there is not any paper work for the car? Other than restoration reciepts. Also does $7,100 seem pretty inexpensive to paint a 69 corvette? I have a 68 427 but it is numbers matching and I bought from the original owner my brother in law. So I never had to do any research. And I am not finding much info on how to ID it. thanks everyone.

There is nothing I know of that can't be faked, however, I would look for these signs:

The differential u-joints should have forged caps with bolts NOT u-bolts.

The tach redline should be 5600 or 6500

Large Brass Radiator

Original BB Hood

How good/bad is the paint? If the body is good, and doesnot require much prep, 7100 is reasonable. There are a lot of variables, and maybe the guy quoting needs to pay some bills, and you can get a break. PICS, PLEASE!

The code on the bottom of the differential should also have a 2 or 3 letter code for a Heavy Duty big block application. If you get the code post it and one of us will tell you what it means. All big blocks also had a rear sway bar.

...all of which, very easily installed at any time.

Without a tank sticker, you can't really tell. And given the fact that you don't have the original motor it doesn't really matter anyway.

So many clones and sadly even blocks are re-stamped these days, just as Pro-Team. So in short unless you have a tank sticker it's all hearsay...

Tank sticker means absolutly nothing. There is no vin number on the tank sticker and the only way to link it up is for the color trim tag to match as well as the grease pencil number on the pass footwell front with the number drawn on the sticker.

Many cars are built using tank stickers because if you have a trim plate repoped, the vin does not matter!!!

I am going down to Phoenix on Thursday. Thanks for the tips. Its SUPPOSIDLY an original 69 427 convertible without the orig motor. It is green with blk interior 4 speed. Supposidly the radio is hooked up and the fan is not hooked up either. They also said that its a part that allows the wipers to work? Some type of vacuum to open the cowl so the wipers can? I will find out tomorrow. They are asking 40 k. Pics soon.

WAY, WAY too much $$ (easily more than 2X) for a completely questionable NOM 69!!

If you have $$ to burn and love it, bless ya!

Sounds way too high. Your description indicates it is NOT perfect. To be worth anything close to that it would need to be perfect AND have a mega buck engine - maybe an all aluminum BB with titanium rods.....
