For me, it was just that I outgrew the whole racing thing for a while. When I was 20, I had more money than sense ... I had both a Supercharged TransAm and a new Viper back in 2000. After seeing a friend wreck on the Gandy bridge (a former popular racing spot in the Tampa area) and end up in the hospital for two weeks, that was pretty much the push I needed to get out of the street racing scene.
Right around then I totally lost interest in the racing scene, but since I was still a motorsports junkie one way or another I figured I'd get into off-roading instead. I got rid of the TA and the Viper, but kept my 81 vette - at the time the only reason I kept it was because I had put so much time into it. The other cars I just had money in and didn't really care, but the vette was an investment in time - bought a $4,400 junker and turned it into a like-new beauty and I just couldn't part with it.
I ended up getting a Jeep Wrangler as my DD and kept the vette just to have a nice car to go out on dates in, it was always my favorite anyway. About a year later I heard about someone who was selling a fully restored 68 427/390 vert and ended up buying that. I've had all 3 cars ever since. Then last year I met some people that were racing and would rent the track for a day just to run their own cars around and figured I'd get into it again, so I picked up the 80 L-82 to build into a track car. Of course now I have 3 kids and more sense than money, so it's a much slower project now than it would have been when I was 20.
I don't really know what it is about the C3 where I just keep coming back to them. They're just timeless like that, and that sets them apart from every other car out there - even the other Corvettes. The chrome-bumper cars are nothing but class, and the 80-82's just have this look about them that's both classic and modern at the same time. I don't think I'll ever sell any of my vettes, and I probably won't ever sell the Jeep either. When you find what you like, you stay with it.
At least I am not the only one that feels that way. Thanks Ron.

Mine too. The only reason we met was the Vette. We both lived in the same apartment complex & she saw me out in the garage one day when she stopped and said she liked my Vette. I asked her if she wanted to go for a ride....

I was inches way from buying a real 70 Hemi Challenger - but I could not convince my dad or uncle to loan me the 5100.00 dollars the guy wanted for it.
I was only 19 going on 20, this was 1982-83. 5100 was a good bit of money. Both my dad and uncle said the car would never be worth anythimg ( WRONG!).
Plus a bunch of other "tree beater" cars along the way...
