Default Can cast iron be sanded?

IWill it be easy to sand off 1/10 of an inch of cast iron material from the top of the drivers side manifold to fit the alternator bracket?

Bit of elbow grease and a lot of patience and sure you can.

Alternatively that is what bench grinders are for.

Its pretty easy to remove metal from anything. Putting it back after you discover that you have removed too much is a different matter however.

The manifolds are already installed and I was thinking of using a sander like the ones that Dremel makes so that I can sand it without removing the manifold.

God..
Alll this work because the aftermarket manifolds have a few mills of extra metal that's not letting me mount the alternator bracket.

Alternatively a front mount only alternator bracket will work too

A disc grinder will work. Remember...there is no add on machine for removed metal

Be careful if you use a grinder. The sparks from the grinder will damage glass , paint etc. Cover everything.

You can't sand cast iron (maybe if you have a whole lot of time on your hands ), you have to use a grinder. Don't forget to wear gloves and cover your arms. I learned that the hard way.

You could probably do better with a hacksaw and a good rasp/file. Notch out most of the waste material with the hacksaw; then smooth and finish to size with a good rasp/file.

Since the manifold is already on the car, I am looking for a disc sander sort of thing. Have anyone used one of those sander bits that can be attached to a drill?

I know it might take some time to do it this way, but I have only a few mills to remove and I have a lot of time

i don't think so, a small grinder will work best. just do a little at a time and keep checking to see if the bracket will fit.

don't forget to protect your eyes or its going to be a long week. i would know

A dremel type with a corse grit disc or drum will do the trick. You will be surprised how much material will come off.

Its going to be just like sanding metal - you aren't going to get anywhere. You need a grinder or a dremel.

Just a thought but have you considered trying to remove material from the alternator bracket ? It is obviously off the car, it might be easier then fooling with a cast iron manifold. Good Luck, Peace,,,Moosie

Poor thing.. It's not the alternator bracket's fault

It's the stock bracket and I'd rather keep it as it, besides the stock bracket is also made out of cast iron.

Default sanding cast Iron

If you have the Dremel tool use the flat deburring tool it will shave the metal like magic

I would grind my Chrysler blocks and heads smooth for the Autorama show purposes. A big air grinder works best and you will covered with cast iron. Dirty job requiring the use of a maskl But any metal can be finished.

Do you have any suggestion for a dremel kit?
There are too many options on their site.

don't know, but I'm pretty sure it can be filed, as I just filed off a little 3/8" x 1/8" defect off the head, so the new valve cover gasket wouldn't leak.
