Check to see if the rims have any runout

5.5" backspaciing they won''t stick out here's mine and I have the 5 inch bs ( which makes them stick out further but they are flush with the fender lip ) with the 9.5 x 18 inch rim. Look at the Toyo T1R's I am very impressed with mine

Back to fitment of the wheels: like you, I want to stuff as much tire under the stock dimensions as makes sense. I will keep you posted with pics and info, as I begin checks.

I have the composite spring supporting the rear axle too and until I can get weight back in the car [motor/trans out now], the data will be incomplete, especially regarding movement. Click my profile & you can see some of the mods in my albums.

Hoping vertical tire travel doesn't interfere on frame or fender; I have offset TA's so not too concerned about those. These wide wheels have a 5.5" bs.

Allegedly, they fit w/275-40 size tire and TNBusa had the 285's on. More info to follow.

Thanks.
I hope he didn’t sell it…I wanted my car to grow up and be just like his.

I’m glad to hear someone has got the same setup as me and trying to put the same wheels and tires, I would like to. I have the offset trailing arms also. Thanks for the help and keep me/us updated.

Here's today's update, friends:

I was late getting into the shop and once there, mounted a rear wheel direct; no spacers or longer studs used.

I raised the wheel with a jack to move it up in the well. There's little weight in car at the moment so bear with me. [pardon my rust/H2O spotting from pressr washing last fall]

I don't see any interference with any of the usual suspects. I don't think a standard sized sway bar will fit; I have a 7/8" bar I thought might go on and will check later if it will. Depending on handling, I've read it may not be needed anyway.

Notice up high there seems to be ample horizontal room to the frame. Can't say for sure but I think a 285-sized tire will be ok.

Measured 1.750" clearance to offset TA.

I have a standard length VB&P mono spring; it looks ok for now too.

Hey Motorhead, I think my dimensions are close, if not a match to yours. Thanks for the tip on the Toyo T1R's, too. I'll check them out.

I'll retake the angle once I get the tires on the wheels and until I get some weight, there's still some guessing. You can see the front 17" with a 245/45 BFG on it now. At least, I can buy the 18" tires with more confidence now.

Hope that helps anyone considering making this move. Again, I'm leveraging info seen with TNBusa's car and he didn't mention any show-stoppers.

So far-so good!

Default Coys with Goodyear Eagles

I am running Goodyear Eagle 275/40ZR18 emt`s on my 18x9.5 with 5.5 backspacing Coys C5`s. Tires were bought used off a `99 C5. These are a run flat tire which is great if you have no spare tub like myself.

These tires are extremely expensive to buy new, but are reletively cheap and easy to find used. Rear spring is a 360lb vb@p composite with 10`` bolts giving 1/2 clearance to inner lip of rim.

Dustup7T2,
Thanks for posting these informative pictures, they give more detail then most others
I have seen. Whats your take on the clearances at the bump out trailing arm pocket on the
frame, do you think a 11 1/2'' wide with 4 1/4'' side wall tire (295/35/18)would rub with your
wheels back spacing?

Thanks,
Riggs.

Hi Riggs. Not sure.

Your tire dimensions are so close to the 285/40's: width ~ .3" wider and biggest difference is aspect ratio; 35 vs. 40.

A 35 has to be shorter than a 40, correct? A quick look at a wheel dimension chart shows overall OD at 26.1" for a 295/35/18 tire.

The 285/40/18 tire measures at 26.8 from the chart I printed [source file-? Each brand may have slightly diff measurements for same size tire].

So, short answer w/caveat: no, with this wheel, wouldn't rub on my car. (caveat: always inspect carefully before buying. Your mileage may vary!)

Thanks for member contributions and questions.
I'll be back.

Default Prolly, Last Update On This Thread

Last Update on this subject:

I want to say a big "Thank You" to all 'you'se guys' for the help provided during the course of my wheel issue. From this point forward, I think it prudent to start new thread(s) as I begin the reassembly of my old dog.

On Morotorheads suggestion, I did indeed look into the purchase of the T1R's from Toyo. Sure, I like to support Made-in-the-USA products when it makes sense. In this instance, my budget really liked this choice and the visual appearance of a competition-style tire with good street cred was equally appealing.

On that note, here they are:

For anyone interested, I'll begin new threads during the reassembly and fitment of each subsystem as the car comes back together. With everyones help, let's see what I can accomplish [and hope for zero rework !!]. Thanks Fellas!

Those rims look great! I don't think I would have had the patience you showed, but in the end you are happy and I would be too.

I took a long break off my '78 resto, and now slowly inching back in. Posts like yours where you guys are showing off "bling" is what is starting to spark my interest again and continue. Thanks for sharing

I love those wheels, but I don't think I would have had the patience to wait that long for them. I'll be on the lookout for future posts about the buildup.

Dustup7T2,

you made a good choice on your tires. I just bought my wheels and tires today
and made these my choice as well, it good to hear that motor head has had
good luck with these. Your wheels mounted on tires look awesome can't wait
to see them on the car.

Thanks for the update,
Riggs.
