I hear alot of talk about looking for bad spots or rust spots when purchasing a vette. I purchased an original 82 that appears to be rust free. How do i keep it that way. It is garage kept, do not drive in the rain. Only time it gets wet is when i wash it and that concerns me how sometimes water will puddle around the trim. I just want to make sure i'm doing everything right so 10 years from now it is still rust free.
Water all by itself won't cause rust problems. In fact standing water won't do much at all. Fill a steel bowl up with water, and the part under the water won't rust.
The problem is moist air. Say your Vette is parked out in the lawn. Every morning the dew settles on the blades of grass that tickle the frame. That'll kill a frame in no time.
The birdcage is an issue because the water gets down and settles, and then in the heat will evaporate and leave a very moist charge of air IN where the birdcage is and corrosion happens.
Obviously I am off in my chemical explanations, but you're already doing a good job of preventing the rust and corrosion. Just try to keep your garage dry and warm and you won't have issues.
For the BEST protection, you can perform a body off frame restoration and strip and coat the frame and suspension components. You can also strip the trim from much of the windshield surround, wire wheel everything, and coat it all in something like Por15 for a lasting protection.

Thanks guys
something like these corrosion protection products also works (for the frame) but it aint pretty...
When you park the car inside you need to make sure that condensation does not form on the surface of the floor under the car. This is the type of moist atmosphere that starts chassis and running gear rust during storage.
