The steering wheel on my '73 is original and while it is in good shape and works fine other than becoming a little sticky from time to time, I'd prefer a leather wrapped wheel.
I've noticed while shopping that there are two main choices of replacement wheels. One around $100 dollars like this one:
And another choice around $200 like this one:
Does anyone have experience with either of these wheels as to the quality of construction, fit and finish, why one is $100 more than the other? Wouldn't mind saving $100 but don't want problems.
Thanks,
DC
EDIT: Decided to follow Gordon's example and sent my wheel to Chuck for recovering. See rest of thread for more info.

Once I ordered a wheel from a couple of different suppliers(mid america and similar), and each time the wheel had a different dish in it. This was for a 82, and this was suppose to be a replacement wheel. I called and complained about it, and they acted like it was no be deal. I told them I couldn't beleive that Vette owners didn't make a big deal out of this. I sent both wheels back and got mine recovered. Be sure you know what your buying(the dish), because it cost a lot to start shipping stuff back.

I just bought the $100 wheel you show in your post [from Rik's Corvette parts], then shot it with vinyl dye to re-color it. It came out great and matches the interior (like the later C3 wheels). I'm keeping the original wheel, of course.
That does look real nice and is certainly an option I will now consider. How long did it take? I'd hate to do without my car for very long.
Could the wheel be put back to original condition if a future owner wanted to?

I think turnaround was about 1 week.
Yes you could just cut the stitching and remove the leather and go back but you will not want to. The leather wheel is so much nicer and the grip is larger so it feels better in your hands.

I have this one. There is no padding under the pleather wrap, so it feels like it belongs in an arcade game, not a real car. It looks good, but feels bad. Eventually I'll have the original restored and get rid of this one.
That leather wrapped wheel on your 72 looks awesome. Excuse my ignorance, but who is Chuck Pelton and how does one get in touch w him?
Rickman
Chuck is his screen name and his real name. Here is a post from him. You can PM him or he gives his phone number in this post. He restores steering wheels.
i have the top one with brushed stainless steel look. i think it looks more like the original. fit fine and feels much better than original. about an inch smaller but i dont mind even without power steering.
Thanks to those who sent me PM's on their steering wheel. We can usually turn the wheels around in just a couple of days. We can also use different leather to match your interior. We use a very thin piece of rubber under the leather to make it a much user friendly feel.
Seriously - the grip on this is very good in MY opinion, I love the smaller wheel and the slotted spokes give it a "first glance" vintage apperance which I love.
