Default Windshield frame measurements needed

My 68 vert ran underneath another car, which rode over the windshield pillar (and windshield). I repaired the car several years ago but have been tinkering with it recently to take care of a few problems. The wiper actuator hit the bottom of the windshield, which broke the windshield. I am now noticing that the windshield fit is not as good (tight) as I would like.

I am looking for as many measurements as possible..
These measurements would be simple if someone has no carpet or windshield trim installed yet. If not, just give me whatever you can.

1) Floor pan to upper edge of post - (straight down)(both sides) using high point of floor pan (not sump)
2) right upper edge of post to outer front top of left quarter
3) left upper edge of post to outer front top of right quarter
4) top of door stricker to upper edge of windshield post (both sides)
5) top of right door striker to left upper post
6) top of left door striker to right upper post

This should help me make sure that all is square and not layed back....

any additional measurements would also be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Hi L-88,
I'm sorry but my car is back together so I can't help.
I think, however, the dimensions you asked for won't help you because you measuring from the birdcage to FIBERGLASS. These dimensions will vary from car to car. The dimensions to the door strikers will vary too, because of how the door is adjusted on each car.
I think you'll need to measure to other points on the birdcage, but I'm not even sure how much they varied. I looked at my AIM and although it shows in detail HOW the birdcage went together there are no dimensions to check.
At least this will get you to the top again.
Good Luck!
Regards,
Alan

Interesting measurements! My car is a 73 coupe. The windshield frame is bare and there is no carpet. To my knowledge, the windshield frame on my car has never been touched, so I can't explain the discrepancies.

I've recorded the measurements below. Let me know is you need any more measurements or pictures taken.

Regards,

Ian

Thanks so much Ian,
The measurements will come in handy. It is tough to get any definitive measurements on these cars as the tolerances are blown away by the assembly process and fiberglass body parts. I wouldn't worry much about the slight differences as it is not uncommon to have slight variances from side to side. I am hoping to get a few different measurements from a few different cars. It really doesn't matter if it is a vert or a t top as the birdcage height and rake are the same. Then, I will take the general average.

From what you provided..., I am pretty freaking close. I do appreciate your assistance and offer for future measurements. I may take you up on that, if needed.

It looks like you have a good start on your project car. Let me know if I can return the favor in any way.

Thanks again!

Thanks for the install info. I don't think my problem is with the glass install, but rather.. the positioning. As I mentioned earlier, the wiper actuator arm hit the bottom of the glass. This is what has caused me to want to recheck everything.

I did learn something from the presentation, though. I am curious about normal spacer positioning and normal (average) distance between wiper rest plate and top center of windshield frame.... It seems like my windshield is too low, or layed back (slightly) which has caused the angle of the (bottom of) glass to not have enough clearance for the arms. Does that make sense??

Thanks and kudo's!!

Default four hands

Ontario is a bit far from Louisiana. Keep in mind that the doors are normally aligned to the quarter and then the front cap is then aligned and glued to meet the doors. Once you have it right and the car is ready for paint ...., by making alignment marks on tape, you can remove and paint jambs and reinstall. I know that your car has the cap already on it, so there really is no great way to initially align.

I know what you mean though. A SECOND PERSON is almost a must.

thanks again for the measurements!!

I live in Slidell. I have a '69 vert. The body is off the frame, and the windshield out. You are welcome to come over and measure and take pics if you would like. The body buck is holding the car pretty well. However, the measurements may change slightly. PM me if you need the measurements.

Does the asembly manual have these dimensions?

Also be critical of the glass supplier!

The safest way to position the windshield frame is to install the doors, roll up the side glass and dry fit either old or new weatherstripping and adjust the windshield frame to fit. Ideally the door glass should to adjusted to properly fit the tops, or one of them, first etc. It ALL has to fit as a package including the tops.

Long involved process, but one you don't want to get wrong.

Personally, I would leave the windshield unglued, but fitted, even until after the car has been painted and almost done. Doesn't interfere with finishng the car at all.

Thanks much. My car is painted. I don't know what is taking so long with the pictures. I am simply double checking the cage because the glass was broken when the windshield wiper actuator arm hit the bottom of the glass.

I think with all the measurements being offered you will do fine, a lot of us have been there, there is nothing purfect about a C3. After lining up as good as possible you can also dry fit the side glass using the flat rear of the clip to align, this will show you if the windshield frame follows the glass. If your side glass follows resonable well, the windshield is ok, don't forget there is lots of ureathane gunk under the shield to compensate (within reason). Nice work !!
