vin problem

vin problem
to make a very unpleasant story real short, I need to know if anyone knows where to locate vin # on the frame of a 1978 vette, I already checked on top of drivers side frame rail at door opening and around rear tire left side on top of frame---with of course no luck
any help would be much appreciated---t.i.a.

Took this pic when I had the fuel tank out of my 78 Pace Car. As you can see, it's pretty much in line with the power antenna, but on the top of the frame. Good luck seeing it without taking something apart

With the body on the chassis I guess it would be possible for the stamp to be so faint that you can't find it.
Why do I wonder what the LONG version of the story is?

If you really must know........the car was brought to me after the owner did a 1/2 assed restoration.....car was a basket case when he bought it with title 78 anniv edition, frame was rotted through, so he bought a frame on evilbay...sorry no title with frame, after full resto he realized he lost the cars original vin tag on windshield pillar 
. he went to mv and was informed that with no tag the popo would have to read frame #'s to verify car was not hot...thus the problem remains, cannot read frame #'s to badly pitted so what is one to do??

There, I got through that whole post without any sarcasm or cynicism revealing that I wouldn't buy that story for $0.25 if it came with a free can of Coke. Well, almost....

You apparantly have a title and should have some bills of sale for parts etc. They are good at lifting numbers and if they believe you and everything checks out, then they will at least issue a new vin tag from the state. They can also be unpredictable. Make sure they understand it is not a high value car.
The MV people aren't usually experts in this area.
