My orig chrome dist cover has a plastic shield underneath that's held in by 4 plastic rivets. Are these available? How to replace the plastic shield if not?
Hi Buddy,
Like Wilcox says the rivets with the original look are no where to be found.
Some people are buying old unrestorable covers and cutting the rivets off so they can be epoxied on to their re-chromed covers. You need tops and bottoms because some people are checking the underside of the cover too. Pretty crazy!!!
Regards,
Alan
Seems to me that the rivets passed through the lid, and then through a washer before being pressed down. I have a picture here of a nos one, I'll see if I have it on this machine. <--Found it.
There really is not much difference in the two covers and the reproduction is actually a better looking part! The chrome is nicer than NOS too! I don't have a shot of the back side but I think the inner shield in the reproduction may be different too! The only difference on top is the translucent appearance of the rivets in the NOS

No Buddy, that award goes to me... many years ago I threw away the CEC solenoid (71 ONLY) in the cloth seat shim bag (only close reproductions).
That still gives me the ******* when I think about it.

Alan
Hi W,
What I was trying to say is that I found you must cut the rivet off on the underside to get a good usable top of rivet, and then cut another rivet off on the topside to get a good usable bottom of rivet.
If I didn't have some stupid thing to be crazy about I'd have to find something serious to be crazy about.
Regards,
Alan
Someone come over and kick my *** because i just cut those off to refurbish my original cover....
Dumbass award of the day goes to.......ME!!
Thanks guys. I've got an original with the rivets in place but some surface rust and was about to drill the rivets out to have the top rechromed. Glad I saw this post.
Is it better to get the repro top and "transfer" the rivets or get the original rechromed? What about the lower part of the box. Is the repro for this any good?
Hi Buddy,
I'd think some NCRS types would be interested in your rivets depending on how accurately they match the originals. Even a slight variation would put them in question in some people's minds.
Regards,
Alan
Ok...I have the rivets and they look good, I will flame polish them thurs and they should come out xtal clear. I need 2 or 3 people who can give me a professional opinion on them. Who is most qualified here? Give me an address(s) and I can send out one to check.
I don't know if I qualify as a professional but I do have my original 1970 top with rivets intact and a keen eye for detail. I'd be happy to inspect your repros and compare to my original cover.
If you do produce these, I'd also be interested in purchasing a set.
I will post when these are ready and for sale, right now I am just looking for some opinions to get them exact.
70454convert,
I popped my originals off before I knew what I was doing...aarrggg, I really need a high res pic of the inside where they are melted so I can make a tool to duplicate the melted part. Anyone else have a pic or suggestion or does it matter?
