Thanks for the heads up on this thread Alan.

Buddy,

The rivets in your photos look very good... I would love to compare them to some originals that I have if you can spare one or two (I'll see that they are returned to you). You can email me at rowdyrat@aol.com.

I would imagine that there are quite a few people in the NCRS crowd that would be interested in these rivets. Price seems a bit steep though... At $10-$12 a set, I think you may have something.

Regards,

Hi Buddy,
Perhaps your work will pay off after all.
If you do end up selling some of the rivets I'd like to get on the customer list.
Regards,
Alan

Stan

I sent you an Email.

Like I said before, Making small quantities by hand is expensive. If a reseller or resellers order quantities then the price will go down.

P.S. Alan, your on the top of the list...

Thx
Buddy Maughon

Buddy,

I have your sample rivets packed up and should be able to get them out to you Fed Ex tomorrow.

I also have some photos and measurements that I took that I will post here... Most likely Sunday.

The rivets are really good. About the only issue I have is the head size, but without an NOS rivet to compare it to, it is really difficult to tell. My guess is that 95% of the people you sell them to will be happy... For the other 5%, they can try and turn the head diameter down on their own.

Very nice job though!

Stan

Thanx..the dimensions are no problem, I have since obtained a cover with original rivets and I am within a few 1/1000th's.

I have around 20 sets of these that I will sell for $4.50 per rivet and includes the washer. When they are gone I will consider making more if there is interest.

Please inform anyone you think might be interested.
First 20 orders gets them.

Thanx
Buddy

Here are the photos of an original production rivet and the one that Buddy has come up with.

The original rivets that I had access to were a bit damaged, but I was still able to get some good measurements accross the entire diameter of the rivet. Figure the originals come in at about .300 nominal and Buddy's version at .340. The big question is, "Is anybody going to notice?" Initially, I think that the answer is "No." That may change once a majority of people discover that there is a reproduction out there, but for now it is close enough that it may be overlooked in judging situations. The fact that the rivet is generally the right size and is translucent is certainly a step in the right direction compared to the current reproduction rivets that come in the ingnition shielding tops.

The shaft diameter is right on the money and while the length is much longer than the original, I think that I would prefer to receive them that way and make the cut myself.

Very nice job Buddy!

Stan Falenski

I have obtained an original cover with orig rivets in excellent shape. Here are the dimensions I get from it.

Anyone else have original they can measure and contribute? I believe there will be a variance in original rivets.

Thx Everyone
Buddy

Buddy,

Very nice! Those rivets are in much better shape than the ones that I had access to.

A couple of points...
  • The rivets that I had came off of a production (i.e. 1969) ignition shielding top.
  • The production rivets that I had were damaged and the measurement that I took may or may not be indicative of an undamaged production rivet.
  • The rivets on the service shielding (i.e. NOS) are practically identical to your reproduction rivet.
  • The service rivets may or may not be the same size as the production rivets.
  • There may have been more than one supplier involved with both the production and service rivets.
  • There was certainly a production tolerance involved when these rivets were made.

Anyone else have original they can measure and contribute? I believe there will be a variance in original rivets.
That's really what is needed at this point... Additional examples to compare to. Still, I think that you have done a really great job with these. There's a check for $40 for two sets in the box with the samples that is on its way back to you!

Regards,

Stan

I have 2 original shields from 71 cars, one from my own car, and one I bought used about 25 years ago.
I don't have calipers to measure them, but I'll stop by the machine shop and ask them to do it.
Regards,
Alan

PS: Buddy, I mailed you a letter today.

I just cleared my box so you can PM. I might have one set but not sure. I made an initial batch and sold them here but that was the end of the interest so I dropped the project. I can make more but I would need several orders or one big order.

Thx
Buddy

Hi Buddy,
If you decide to make some more rivets I'd buy a couple more sets.
