Well.....never thought of this until yesterday, cause I have lived in several "no inspection" states, and can pretty much do whatever i want to these old cars, but wife said that Tx has inspections,so I am wondering what to expect when we land there next month?
I believe that my 68 will be okay w/the sidepipes, etc.,cause it is pre-75,but am worried about my 75.I use it as my run around car,and I did pull the sidepipes off the car,and put headers w/big tube exhaust all the way out the assend. Is this going to be a problem?I kept all the original exhaust, and manifolds from the car,but not really wanting to have to change everything back over.
I have to get a new sticker this month for the 75.....how long can I run Illinois plates in TX,and get away w/it ya think?
Any/all help/thoughts is appreciated.Man....I must love my wife.Everything I worked to build....I am renting it,and starting fresh...
Thanx....
I believe you are only legal for 60-90 days. Then you are suppose to have them converted including your driver's license.
The 68 shouldn't be an issue - that will be a safety inspection. The 75 may be slightly different but I think the emmission testing is for 25 years which make you ok with but I'm not sure if they check for emmissions components to be in place. If you find the right place, they won't hassle you.
You have to get the car inspected before you can get then tagged and you need a special green form.
I would repost in the SouthWest section to confirm.
I originally move to Texas from Illinois but it's been 17 years now......
What part of Texas are you moving to? You can register the car as an antique, pay $55 for a 5 year license plat and never have the car inspected. now with that are restrictions, you can only use it in parades, club events and a few other exceptions but I don't remember. With that said I have been driving it that way for several years and never once been hasseled by the police. You could always say you are on the way to have something worked on , club function, etc. If you just drive it occasionally I think you could get away with that. If you need it as a DD I would have it registered.
i just had my 72 inspected in san antonio as a daily driver.
they checked lights, low and high, wipers, brakes, signals, reverse lights, and plate light.
that was it.
they opened the hood (just to look)
it had headers, no AIR and and it passed just fine
not all counties do emissions, most just do the above mentioned safety check.
Thanks for the heads up w/what to expect.
I'm going to Odessa. We are blasting down there this coming Thursday to try to secure me a shop over the weekend, and be back Monday morning, and be moved by the end of March. That's the plan, anyways.
I have antique plates on my 68 now,and haven't been harassed,or bothered, but have the whole..." on the way for a oil change,Sir" gig ready. The 75 would/is the DD when the weather permits. One thing to look forward to is the better weather.
I will post this in the regional section.
Thanks guys!

As long as you don't get pulled over for anything then you can run IL plates as long as you want. (Not legally of course) If you get pulled over, you have to be comfortable with lying & say you are just visiting. Now if you see the same cop a month later..... Here, if you get stopped you don't need your registration, only your license & insurance card. DPS is whom you need to watch for, they are professional, if you get pulled over by them, 95% of the time you will get a ticket. 7 miles over will usually get you a greetings from the state. Small towns are generating a lot of revenue right now via traffic fines so pay attention to those local speed signs. Most places have warning signs that speeds are slowing ahead, but not all. I think the state has taken care of most of the speed traps (ie 70 down to 35 w/no warning) but the locals do pay attention. I try to stay no more than 4-5 over anywhere (except school zones). Out past Odessa, I10 & I20 will turn to 80mph
Thanks for the info.I ran under FLA drivers liscense here in Illinois for about 5 years, but FINALLY got them changed over.I will get everything legal. My green vette stands out alot, and they WILL remember it,so want to "get right".
Thanks for taking the time to share.
