Default Vacuum canister question

Hello, Just getting back into things. Been away from the car for two years. One quick question the vacuum canister on the drivers side. It has a return hose going to the gas tank. This connection is rusted out. There other lines going into the canister that are plugged. Can I just remove the canister, lines, and such. Trying to clean up the engine compartment.
Any help is great,... Oh it is a 1979 L48
thanks
steve

i wouldnt remove it......your gas tank is not vented and that cannister allows the tank to equalize the pressure, some times when people remove them they start to smell gas fumes. i am sure people have removed them and switched to vented gas caps but i wouldn't do it

The canister purge is a good thing.

If you can remove the cannister, just refurbish it (or replace it) and stick it back in. It only does "good things" for your car and the air. Plus, the vacuum systems on your car will not work [or will not work as well] without the cannister. It acts as an accumulator and stabilizes the vacuum level for those systems, regardless of what your engine is doing at the time./

Interesting that this thread pop up now as I'm contemplating the same thing. 77 coupe (no wiper door), fixed headlights, ordered Hydroboost at Carlisle. The only thing left that needs vacuum is the dist. which pulls off the intake. I'm thinking of getting rid if the line and all (capping at the tank) and a vented gas cap. Cat is gone, AIR pump is gone, why not?

Isn't your heating/vent system operated by vacuum, too? {Even if you don't have A/C, the ducting door servos are vacuum operated, as is the air inlet door in the cowl area.}

That's OK....as long as you don't have a GAS furnace or water heater in the garage!

I was thinking the same thing...I think the op was talking about the carbon canister and others are talking about the vacuum reserve tank.

on my 77 the "storage tube" is right under the headlights and is the round tube that connects to the frame

The vapor canister on your 77.

The cross tube in front is used as the vacuum tank.

I also vote that you are referring to the "vapor canister". If it has (or had) a hose that goes back to the tank, that's exactly what it is, part of ECS (Evaporation Control System).

Don't forget to plug the nipple on the gas tank and get a vented cap.

I was wondering the same thing too though. The stuff on the tank is missing and I figured it would be $100 for all new hoses and everything. The car ('73 BB) is stock now, but has nice aluminum valve covers ready to go on, and if the intake and carb get upgraded, it may be better to not have the 2 extra hoses. I don't know if a little gas fumes will be an issue.

That cannister is so hidden within the fender, it is not going to 'clean up your engine compartment' if it's gone. What you will have done is remove a smog device that is good for the environment, at zero impact to performance. The only other thing that can claim that is the PCV.

In my case at least, I disagree. Over the years the PO (named Bubba DuMas) cut and hacked all the vacuum lines putting all sorts of open T fittings to nowhere. Since I didn't know where all the stuff was going (or what was getting sucked in may wind up) out it came (so far about 8' of hose, none bigger than 18" and all connected to each other). I have no wiper or headlight doors, hydroboost arrives Tues/Weds, AIR pump and cat are long gone and the motor will finally get a good tune so what comes out the sidepipes will be cleaner than it has been in years. /:\
