I spent yesterday under the dash of my '72 replacing switches. The first was easy and took minutes: the wiper over-ride. The turn signal switch took longer, especially 'cause the dealer (now out of business) sold me the wrong switch. The plug looked the same, but was about 1/8 longer, so I had to carefully change the prongs into the old one. Then I changed the ignition lockout switch for the clutch. It is held on by one screw, but placed in such a difficult position that it took about three hours on my back on the floor, hand cramping, while I worked with a 1/4 drive socket wrench. Whoever planned it should be forced to drive a Yugo in rush-hour LA traffic for the rest of his life!

It can help to take the seat out sometimes, but that wouldn't help much with the turn signal switch.

The hardest problem was getting my hand up around all the brackets, rods and pedals and getting the wrench on the hex-head screw. Then getting it started back in was just as bad. My hand kept cramping from the weird position.

Correction.... It helps to take the driver's seat out every time you work under the dash!

I sweet talk my slender handed wife when it comes to tight spots. It usually cost me a dinner date the next day though.

I've been working on these cars since the early 80's, and I have to agree. The C3 requires you to be a contortionist to work on it.

good for you guys that you CAN do it! Maybe it would help if I removed the drivers seat, but there were a few under-the-dash jobs that I just couldn't do because I get too claustrophobic under there. When I start to feel like I can't breathe and might puke I really can't finish the job.

I've restored a couple C3's and it would a lottery winning if I got a buck for every time I mumbled under my breath "whoever designed this thing should be shot...then hung"

My hands are a lot like tennis rackets. So I wait until I have a number of good reasons to get under the dash, then just take it all out (again), fix everthing that has gone bad, and put it all back together again. Still a pain in the backside.

Default under dash?

Under dash is a real challenge sometimes for sure but---door glass adjustment is my nightmare! When one side seems to need to go all the way in one direction for fit and the other side needs all the way the other way for fit!! You put all new weatherstrip and the glasses just don't seem to be just where they should be---close but no cigar?!!!

Default Hood release bracket

Has anyone changed the hood release bracket? I was going to do it while I was doing all the other stuff, but it looked like a pain and I was out of time. It looks the A/C outlet on the dash blocks the bolts. but I might get at it with an open-end wrench. Before I start I want to know how much grief to expect.

Hi CS,
Perhaps if you take kick panel off that side, it'll give you a little more space to reach up there with your open-end wrench.
Regards,
Alan
